Description

(No Model.)
S. POOLE. SHUTTER FASTENBR.
No. 287,158. Patented Oct. 23, 1883.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL POOLE, BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN J. TOWER, OF SAME PLACE.
SH UTTER-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 287,158, dated October 23, 1883, Application filed July 20, 1883. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL POOLE, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shutter-Fastenings; and the following is declared to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
Devices for opening shutters and for securing the same when either open or shut, and for holding the shutter in any desired intermediate position, have heretofore been made. In many cases it has been difficult to apply these devices and to make them Work in a satisfactory manner.
My invention relates to a fastening in which there is a curved arm, one end of which is pivoted to lugs upon a base-plate secured to the shutter, the other end being pivoted upon a sliding collar. This collar fits over and slides upon a rod, the ends of which are supported by brackets secured to the window-sill. Said rod is placed parallel with the window-sill; and I employ a thumbscrew passing through the collar to clamp the same upon the rod and retain the shutter in an open or closed or intermediate position, as desired.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of part of a shutter and window-frame with the fastening in position, and Fig. 2 is a plan of the fastening.
The window-casing A, sill B, and shutter C may be of any desired construction. The brackets a and rod b are formed or secured together, the brackets being screwed upon the surface ofthe sill B and supporting the rod 12.
Upon the rod 12 there is a collar, 0, made with a boss upon the upper side, through which the thumb-screw d passes for clamping the collar upon the rod. 1).
Upon the lower part of the shutter, near the hinge-connection to the frame or casing, there is secured a base-plate, g, with projecting lugs h. The arm f is pivoted at one end to the lugs h, and at the other end to the lugs eupon the sliding collar 0. The arm f is preferably curved, as shown, to allow the shutter to be fully opened without coming into contact with the corner of the shutter or the window-casing.
To operate this fastening the thumb-screw clamping the movable collar to the rod is loosened, and the collar moves upon the rod, and the link f swings the shutter open or closed. By clamping the collar at the proper place upon the rod by the set-screw, the shutter is held at any desired angle or fastened either open or shut. WVhen there are two shutters for one window, the rod upon the sill is to be sufificiently long for the sliding collars employed with both blinds, as seen in Fig. 2.
I claim as my invention In a shutter-fastening, the combination of an arm, the pivots at the ends of the arm, lugs upon the shutter, the sliding collar and its clampingscrew, and a rod and its support upon the window-sill, the parts being con- 65 structed and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
Signed by me this 13th day of July, A. D.
SAMUEL POOLE.
