Description
J. A. OTIS.
Improvement in Fence-Posts.
N0. 114,189. PatentedApril25,187l.
(that $111M ,J OEL A. OTIS, OF'WATERTOWN, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 114,189, dated April 25, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE-POSTS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOEL A. OTIS, of Watertowu, in the county of Jefferson and State ofNew York, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Fence- Posts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, and in which-'- Figure 1 represents an elevation, from its one side, of a fence-post constructed in accordance with my improvement;
Figure 2, a similar view from the opposite side of the same; and
Figure 3, ah edge view thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists in a feuce-post'i'n which the lower brace is arranged on one and the same side with the uprights and with two oblique braces, the one of which extends from the one end of the lower brace to the under side of the upper brace, at its one end, and the other of which extends from the opposite end of the lower brace to the other oblique brace, at a point intermediate of its height, in combination with two supplementary upper braces, arranged the one below the other on the same side as the bottom brace, and on the opposite side to that on which the top brace lies, said supplementary upper braces being arranged to occupy reverse oblique positions, and so that they vtie the uprights in opposite directions.
, By this construction I produce a fence-post that efiectually transfers support of the upper brace and also a generally substantial character is given to the whole structure.
.Referring to the accompanying drawing- A represents the lower brace of my improved fencepost, and B B its uprights, which,as well as the two main oblique braces D D, are arranged on one and the same side of the lower brace. The'oue, D, of these oblique braces extends from the one end of the lower brace to the under side of the upper brace, at its one end, crossing the two uprights, and the other, D, of said oblique braces extends from the opposite end of the lower brace to a point intermediate of the height of the other oblique brace.
The upper brace E is arranged on the opposite side of the uprights to that on which the lower brace'A lies.
F F are reversely-disposcd supplementary upper braces on the same side of the uprights as the lower brace A. These supplementary braces are arranged to run in opposite oblique directions, the one below or supporting theother, and so as to tie the uprights in reverse directions, commencing at the top of the post.
The several parts thus arranged are securely nailed or otherwise fastened, the one upon the other, at their respective places of junction or where they cross each other, making of the whole a most substantial structure.
What is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, isv The combination and arrangement, relatively with each other, of the supplementary oblique braces F F, the main oblique braces D D, the uprights B B, the
lower brace A, and upper brace E, substantially as shown and described.
JOEL A. OTIS.
