Description
almtel e i statte @anni l @da a f l New LoUIs. w. Bo'snnr, or
sT. MARIE, ILLINOIS.
' Letters Patent No. 83,911, dated November 10, 1868.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Louis W. BosAnT, of St. Ma rie, in the county of Jasper, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in. Portable Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the'annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of two sections of my improved fence, on either side of a gate-way;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same; and
Figure 3 is an end view of oneof the sections.
The same letters in all .the figures indicate the same parts.
The object of this invention is an improvement in portable fences; and it consists in additional supports for strengthening such fence, as will be hereinafter described.
AA are two panels offence, consisting of the usual posts, B, panels, C, braces, D, and braces, E, which maybe of any suitable material, and secured tightly7 together in any suitable manner.
A panel, constructed as above described, constitutes a portion of a fence of ordinary construction, but heretofore great difiiculty has been experiencedy in keeping such panels in position, owing to the fact that the braces are usually attached to such panels, their endsk being secured together by various devices, which have been found to be insuiiicient to retain them in their proper positions.
To obviate this diiculty, I usea post, B, to the upper end of which I attach the braces E E, the lower ends of which are secured to a cross-piece, which, in
turn, is secured to the lower end of said post, thus securing the whole firmly together, the cross-piece at the bottom furnishing the means of anchoring the whole to the earth, should it become necessary. One of these posts, arranged as above described, is placed between each ofthe panels, which are secured thereto by means of keys or wedges, which are driven through Inortises in said posts, and into the spaces between there-ils of said panels, and between the battens upon their ends.
I have described my invention as applicable to portable fences generally, but it is regarded as particularly applicable to gate-ways in such fence, as the post B,
vin connection with the ends of the panels, forms a much more substantial and reliable support for the gate than can be had when such gate is secured to the ends of the panels.
I am aware that fences have been constructed with panels, said panels being braced similarly to those in my application. These, therefore, I do not claim; but I am not aware that such panels have ever been used in combination with the additional gate o1* fence-post B; and hence,
What I claim as my invention, and desire to lsecure by Letters Patent, is'- The combination of the post B', panels A, and wedges or keys F, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my naine to this specification, in the presence of twosubscribing witnesses.
LOUIS W. BOSART. Witnesses:
JAMES Kran, MARTHA A. HALsnY.
