FENCE-POST.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Dona SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVinchester, in the county of Randolph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to posts or stays for wire fences and has for its object the production of a fencestay which is simple in construct-ion, efficient in operation and consists of a comparatively small number of parts.
Another object of this invention is the provision of means for facilitating the securing of the laterally extending braces to the fence.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fence showing the post or stay attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the connection of the post and laterally extending braces to the top wire of a fence. Fig. 3 is a side view of a modification of my stay or post.
Referring to the drawings by numerals (1) designates the main stay or post which is provided with a spiral lower end (2) adapted to fit into the ground as shown in Fig. .1. The upper end of the main stay (1) is twisted around the top wire (3) of the fence as at near the vertical strand or reinforcing member (5) of the fence. The reinforcing member (5) is also twisted around the bottom and top strand at its respective ends as at (6) and (7). An ad ditional reinforcing member (8) is also carried by the fence near the main stay (1) and is twisted at its upper end around the top wire of the fence as at A binding member (10) is twisted around the main stay (1) and the reinforcing members (5) and (8) as shown in Fig. 1, for securing the same firmly together.

A plurality of laterally extending braces (11) and (12) also engage the fence and are each provided with a spiral end (13) which is adapted to be placed in the ground as shown in Fig. 1. The upper end (141) of the brace (11) is twisted around the wire (3) between the upper twisted end (9) of the brace member (8) and the twisted end (6) of the brace member (5), it will therefore be obvious that the upper twisted end (14) will be held against lateral movement between the ends of the brace members. The upper twisted end (15) of the brace (12) is held against lateral movement between the twisted end (4:) of the main stay (1) and the twisted end (6) of the reinforcing member (5).
Another embodiment of my invention is shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing in which (16) designates the main stay which is provided with a spiral lower end (17 The main stay (16) is also twisted around the top wire (18) of the fence in a similar manner as shown and described in Fig. 1. The main stay (16) is placed upon the opposite side of the fence to the reinforcing stay (5) and the main stay and reinforcing stay are bound together by means of a wire (19) which is twisted around both of saidstays.
The fence is braced by means of a bracing member (20) which passes over the wire (21) and is bound tightlyto the sides of the fence for some distance by means of a wire (22) which is twisted around the same as shown in Fig. 3. The ends of the bracing member (20) extend laterally of the fence and terminate at their lower ends in spirals (23) and (24) which are adapted to be secured in the ground.
From the foregoing description it will be obvious that I have provided a stay which will greatly reinforce a fence.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a fence comprising a plurality of vertical reinforcing strands and horizontal strands, of a main stay provided at its lower end with anchoring means and having its upper end twisted upon the upper longitudinal strands, a reinforcing member twisted around the upper longitudinal In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my strands and secured to said fence, a binding signature in presence of two Witnesses.
