Description
A. G. POWELL.
Pence No. 213,932. Patented April 1, 1879.
ATTORNEKP' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIGE.
ABRAM Gr, POWELL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,932, dated April 1, 1879; application filed October 4, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAM G. POWELL, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful-Improvements in Fences; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective of my invention, and Fig. 2 shows perspective details.
My invention has for its object to provide a base-block for the reception and retention of a fence-post and its pins or stays; and-my improvement consists in the peculiar construction of said base-block, and its combination with said post and pins or stays.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A indicates the base-block B, the fence-post, and O D the pins or stays. The block A has a central vertical opening, a, for the passage of the post B, and two inclined openings, a a
on either side of the central opening, a, for the passage of the pins or stays G D, said openings a c inclining in opposite directions, so that the pins which pass through them will flare or spread apart as they descend.
The block A may be either cast or forged, and made in one solid piece or in sections, held together by bolts or other suitable fastenings.
The operation of setting a post is as follows: The block A is first laid on the ground and the post driven through the central opening, a; or the post may be first driven into the ground, and the block then slid down over it until it rests upon the ground. The pins 0 and D are now inserted in the openings a a and driven into the ground until their upper ends project but slightly beyond the top of the block A. Keys, Wedges, or nails are now inserted between the projecting ends of the pins and the post B, or between said pins and the sides of the openings through which they pass.
I am aware that it is not, broadly, new to support a fence-post in or by means of a base or foot having openings for inclined stakes. I therefore do not claim such as my invention, but rest my claim on the novelty which consists in so constructing the base-block that the stakes shall intersect the post within said block.
What I claim as my invention is 1. The base-block A, having central vertical opening, a, for the post, and openings a a on either side of said central opening, and inclining in opposite directions, for the pins or stays, said openings being formed on lines which intersect in the block, substantially as shown and set forth.
2. In combination with base-block A, having central vertical passage, a, and inclined openings at a, the post B, and pins or stays C I), said openings being formed on lines which intersect in the block, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of September, 1878.
ABM. G. POWELL.
