DEVELOPING-TRAY.
specilcatlon of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 13, 1915.
Application fled June 8, 1914. Serial Io. 843,400.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Gnoaen M. Cnawroan, citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh in the count of Allegheny and State of iennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Developing-Trays; and lowing to be a full, clear, tion thereof.
My invention relates to developing devices for use in connection with photo phic negatives or plates, and has for its 0 ject to provide a cheap, simple and efiicient mechanical device which will automatically do the work of developing that is usually performed by hand stant moving of the trays in order to keep the liquids used in developing stirred up or and exact descripmoving, as well'as such a device as will en-' able the plates to be seen at all times and thus show their condition in the developing process.
To these ends my invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my improved developing device, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a .top plan view of my improved developing device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing some of the parts in section. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the tray on line 3-3 Fig. 2.
Like symbols of reference herein indicate like parts in each of the figures of the draw- As illustrated in the drawing, my improved developing device is shown at A, in the tray supported upon the legs or standards 2 and provided with the reservoir 3 at one end of the same, having its'inner wall 4 forming the end of said tank perforated across the width of such tank as at 5. Leading from the other end of the tank 1 is the suction pipe 6, which is fimnel shaped at its connection with said tank, as at 7, and has a strainer onperforated cover 8 over the same and within the bottom 1 of said tank. This pipe 6 extends I do hereby declare the foldevices through the con- 'fluid in the tray horizontally under the tray and leads to and beyond the front end of said tray where it extends upwardly and vertically and connects with any suitable pumping device such as the lower end of the cylinder of any ordinary force pump B. A discharge pipe 9 leads from the cylinder 10 of the pump B and connects with the reservoir 3 on the tank 1 by branch pipes 9' on each side of the same. 1
The pump B as shown is hand operated from the handle 10', which is connected to a shaft 11 mounted in the standard 12, and a pinion 13 on said shaft meshes with a gear wheel 14 on a shaft 15 mounted in said standard above the shaft 11, while such shaft is connected through suitable means 16 with a piston rod 17 an such rod connects with a piston (not shown) inthe cylinder 10.
The use and operation of my improved developing device is as follows: The negatives or plates a to be developed are laid in the tray 1 and upon the removable rests 19 and then such rests such lates are placed within the tank by tting a ong each side of the same. The 19 .are rovided with raised portions 20 at interva in the same for the purpose of separating such plates a when m thereon for developing and to form spaces or openings 18 between the plates, so that such plates may be removed at any time by placing the fingehrs un-E er the same through said openings. 0 developing and such uid is of suflicient quantit to extend slightly over the plates a and fili up the suction pipe 6, so that such fluid can be circulated and mixed, as hereinafter described, and with said plates now in position on the rests 19 in such tray, the device will be ready for the developing of such plates. This developing process is accomplished in the following manner: The handle 10' is turned with the resultant reciprocation of the piston on the piston rod 17. In this connection it will of course be apparent that the piston rod 17 is actuated by the handle 10' through the medium of the gears 13 and 14 and the connecting means raised and lowered in the cylinder 10, the 1 will be pumped or forced therefrom through the suction or inlet pipe 6 into the said cylinder, and thence through the discharge pipe 9 and its branches 9' confluid is placed within the tray 1 16. As the piston is thus -andthgnce into said .tray
1 w all will prevent the vice other than the ,and thus ma plates, etc. It w n i s i n i he-l k into the reservoir 3 through the perfm' rated portion 5 inthe inner wall 4 of said reservoir, so that there will be a circulation of the fluid in such the plates a therein,
necting such cylinder,
while such perforated from the reservoir to injureith'e plates ahd thereby permit them to nly and properly developed. If a i ga rotary, e c be. s an it d esired, any operating or'oper'ating dehand device can be connected to. the pump while var ous other modifications and changes in design, application, construction, and operation of my improved developing devlcg cap be made, without departing from the spirit of the mvention or sacrificing any of t s adyantages, It will thus be seen that my mproved developing device .can be used 1n connection with plates, negatives, films, or other objects in developing work and by using a subdued light such objects can seen at any time while in the y and .if desired, the operator need only be required to look after: the proper development of the plates, etc.,"w here the device is made power driven. also be seen that in the use f my improved developing device thgcgnkstant' cirguiliatiipn of tihe develq in ui es s i c ui stituzeu at: all so;that. erfi is no si ll ngiqwhilga, constant mixtureof the 'fluid will be maintained, to renderIit uniform as, to strength uniform work on the further H55 6! that .in e f m r ed ev qp d vis the perforated wall in the reservoir will tend to break the efl'ectof the torce of the liquid after leaving the pump, and will cause the fluid to have a eon t ant e ven and .smogth flow across and around theplates and net, intermittently, thus .retard' the, flow of the liquid to some extent :5, avoiding the spoiling of the plates by too great va pres sure- What I claimas m invention and ,desire. to secure by Letters atent is 1. A devicejor, treating photograp ic plates and the like, comprisin a tray for containing a late-affecting fluid, said tray being adapted for the reception oi a plate. horizontally therein so as to be-immersed in the fluid, and means for withdrawing A fluid at one part of said tray and reuntro ducing it at another art, whereby a-con-- tinuous circulation o the fluid, is .main tained about the plate immersed =therein device ,for treating photographic comprising late-afl'ecting fluid, saidtray for the reception of a .plate therein so as immersed in,
containing a adap horizontally tray and over and around a fluid as pumped-from plates and the like,
desired, any form of a'p'uin'p such as proce'ss of developing,
such plates, and means for hold the fluid, and a we a when sai pump is operated, a continuous circulation of the fluid is maintained about the .plateimmersed therein. g

A device for treating photographic. plates and the like, comprisin a tray fun containing a plate-aifecting fluid, said tray having means therein for supporting plates horizontally above the bottom thereof and, inupersed in the fluid, and means for'withdrawing the fluid at one part of said tray. and introducing it at another part, whereby; a continuous circulation of the fluid is main tained about the plate immersed therein 5. A developing device comprising a tray.
'for the developing fluid, a, reservoir at one end of said tray, means for holding the plates toab e developed within the tray and fluid, an pumping means for discharging saidfluid into said reservoir to circulate the developing fluid therefrom through the tray. and around the plates, said reservoir-having a perforated wall to discharge the fluid into said tra v 6. A developin device comprisin auhorizontal trayv for t edeveloping flui means for holdin the plates to be developed horizontally within the tray and fluid and above the bottom of the .tray, means to separate for circulating the; the plates.
comprising a hori-,
