SAFETY WATCH POCKET. APPLICATION FILED JULY 11.1914.
IIIIL RALPH E. JONES, 0F MANHATTAN, KANSAS.
SAFETY WATCH-POCKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 6, 1915.
Application filed July 17, 191%. Serial No. 851,599.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAL?H E. J ONES, citizen of the United States, residing at Manhattan, in the county of Riley and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Watch-Pockets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in pockets for articles of clothing, and as its principal object it aims to provide a safety watch pocket adapted particularly for use on overall bibs.
A further object of my invention is to provide for the bib of an overall a patch watch pocket which is entirely closed except for a restricted mouth which is produced by leaving the portion of one longitudinal edge of the pocket free from the overall bib.
Another object is to provide at the approximate central portion of the pocket mouth a pair of co-acting fastening devices, one of which is in the nature of a stud carried by the bib of the overall and the other is in the nature of a socket plate carried by the pocket.
A still further object is to form in the bib at a point thereof immediately adjacent to the mouth of the pocket a slit through which the wearer of the overalls may insert his forefinger when it is desired to engage the socket plate and the bib carried stud.
Another and more general object of my invention is to provide a safety watch pocket, for overalls and coarse working shirts or coats, which embodies the essential features of simplicity, durability and efficiency and is capable of being manufactured at a relatively low cost.
The above recited and other incidental objects of a similar nature, which will be hereinafter more fully treated, are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the claim, which is appended hereto and forms a part of this application.
Referring now to the drawings, wherein there has been illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts; Figure 1 is a detail View in front elevation of an overall bib showing my safety watch pocket properly applied thereto. In this figure a portion of the overall trousers is illustrated to disclose the manner in which my safety watch pocket may be applied to the interior of the trousers pocket of the garment; Fig. 2 is a detail view in front elevation of the pocket and a portion of the bib to which it is attached. In this View the edge of the pocket mouth is turned back to afford a clear disclosure of the manner in which the fastening device is conjointly applied to the bib and the pocket; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2, showing a watch in position in the pocket; and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the modified form of the inven tion, showing the fastening device of the pocket mouth separated and illustrating further the manner in which the wearer of the garment may insert his forefinger through a slit formed in the bib for the purpose of closing the pocket mouth.
Before proceeding to the detailed description of the invention, I desire to explain that, while the pocket has been designed particularly for use in connection with overall bibs, has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and will be hereinafter described in that connection, it may, nevertheless, be applied with equal satisfaction to the trousers portion of the overalls or may be used in connection with a shirt, coat, or any other garment, in which it is desired to have a safety watch pocket.
The preferred form of pocket is, as shown particularly in Fig. 1, of the patch type, consisting as it does in arelatively small piece of suitable fabric which is stitched to the overall bib, preferably on the left side thereof. The patch, designated by the numeral 10, is stitched to the bib 11 along its upper and lower edges and completely along its outer edge. The inner edge of the patch is, however, stitched to the bib for only a portion of its length so that the upper portion of the inner edge is free from the bib producing a mouth, indicated at 12 in Fig. 2 particularly. This mouth is of such length that a watch of ordinary size may be easily inserted in the pocket or withdrawn therefrom. It will be seen that the lower portion of the inner edge of the patch is stitched to the pocket sothat, when the watch is in position in the pocket, it cannot be re-. moved therefrom unless the watch chain is drawn out such a distance as will lift the Watch to the upper portion of the pocket.
' watch against accidental displacement in the pocket, I employ a fastener by which the g In order to additionally safeguard the mouth of the pocket may be closed, when desired. This fastener consists preferably in a socket plate 13 anda ball stud v 141:, the socket plate 13 may be attachedto the bib in any well known manner and a stud 14: similarly attached to the mouth portion of the pocket or the'position of the members may, if desired, be reversed, and the stud be applied to the bib and the'socket to the pocket. It will be obvious particularly upon reference to Fig. 1 in which the fastener is indicated by dotted lines that the mouth may be effectively closed to prevent the accidental displacement of the watch from the pocket. v
I have found in practice that it is sometimes diiiicult to quickly connect the ball stud and the socket plate of the fastener. In order, therefore, to remove this objection to my pocket, I provide in a modified form of the invention, as shown in Fig. 4:, a slit 15 in the bib. This slit is located adjacent the seam 16 which connects the two portions of the bib and is located in transverse'alinement with the fastener. The fastener of the modified form ofthe invention consists, as in the preferred form, in a ball stud 17 and a socket plate, indicated by dotted lines at 18 in Fig. 4. It will be obvious upon reference to this 'lastmentioned figure of the drawings that the wearer of the garment may, by inserting histhumb through the slit 15 and by bringing his forefinger to bear against the member 18, readily effect the engagement of the two elements of the fastener. I In reduction to practice, it has been found that the form of this invention illustrated in the drawings, and referred to in the above description as the preferred embodiment, is the most efficient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the itis desired to emphasize the fact that various minor changeslin details of' construction, proportion and arrangement of parts] may be'resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as definedin the appended claim.
As shown in Fig. 1, particularly, my a safety pocket may be applied to trouser pockets'of a suit-of overalls or other suitable garment. H Y r v 7 Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is p The combination with a supporting body formed of portions having their adjacent edges secured together to provide an overlapping seam, of a safety watch pocket including a patch having its edges stitched to the body except for a relatively small portion of one edge arranged adjacent said seam, which unstitchedportion constitutes the mouth of the pocket, coacting fastening devices carried by themouth portion of the pocket and the adj acent portion of the body, the fastening device carried by the body being arranged upon one side of and immediately adjacent said seam, and a slit formed immediately adjacent the other side of the seam opposite said last mentioned fastening device and extending substantially parallel with the seam whereby the said seam will provide a relatively thick portion upon one side of said slit and between the slit and said last mentioned fasteningdevice, whereby the wearer of the body may readily insert a finger in said slit to bear against the base of the said last mentioned fastening device. V In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
