Specification of Letters Patent.
- Patented Ma 9, 1915.
Application filed April 11, 1910. Seriaflio. 654,627.
To all whom it ay concern: v I
Be it known that I, 'VVILLIA HiDowrzs,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Morristown, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trousers, of which thefollowing is a specification. Y
This invention relates to improvements in trousers.v I w I One object of the invention is to provide a pair of trousers the fly of which is closed at its upper end so that the front upper portion of the trousers and waistband is con tinuous or unbroken, thus presenting a neat, smooth, appearance. Another object is; to provide means whereby the closed front of'the trousers is drawn back and caused to. fit snugly and neatly across the front, said means also supporting the trousers, thus dispensing with the useof suspenders, belts, or other supporting de vices.
A further object is to provide means whereby the trousers may be quickly and" easily put on or taken off without opening as now trousers with a part of the waistband lining.
broken away'to illustrate more clearly the construction of the elastic supporting and holding strip. Fig. 3, isa similar'view with the elastic supporting strip removed and showing the eyes with whichthe ends of said strip are adjustably connected. Fig. 4: is a-- perspective view-of the inner side of the elastic supporting strip. Fig.5 is a horizontal sectional view through the upper por- 'tion or waistband of the trousers. I
Referring more particularly to the-draw- ,ing, 1 denotes my improved trousers, the' fly 2 of which is closed at-it's upper end, there by forming a continuous or unbroken surface for the upper front portion 2" and waistband, said portion thus presenting. a-
in a snug fit by suitable smooth, neatly fitting appearance. This continuous front portion of the trousersis held means hereinafter described. 5
In order to facilitatethe putting on and taking off of the trousers, the opposite sides of the sameare opened down a suitable distance from the top as. shown at 3, said openseams of the trousers." The front edges of the openings 3 overlaptherear edges and said edges are normally secured. together by suitable fastenings which may be in the form of buttons, hooks or resilient head and socket-fastenings 4, as shown. The upper ends of the openingsarepreferably provided with adjustable fastenings of any ings being preferably in line with the side able character, but which are here shown in the form of"hooks 5;;ad t d" e engaged with one of a plurality of g justable'fastenings permit the'wais tband of the trousers to be lengthened or shortened V as desired to fit thesame to? the waist of the I wearer.-
v Arranged on the inner side of thetrousers,
and preferably beneath the waistbandlining, is afstrip of elastic webbing 7, the opposite ends of which'are secured by flexible tabs 8 to the inner sides ofthe rear portion of the trousers. On the ends of the webbing 7 are secured hooks 9 which are adapted to be. engaged with one of a plurality of eyes 10secured'to the inner side of the rear portion of'the trousers near the ends of the webbing 7 and beneath the tabs 8.
p The strip of webbing is provided for the ,double purpose of drawing the front portion of the trousers into close engagement Withthe body of the wearer, and also for supporting and holding the trousers up in proper positionwithout the use of suspend- 'ers, buttons, belts'or any other supporting Byproviding the hooks 9 and'plujrality of eyes 10 the ends of the webbing strip 7 can be adjusted thereby increasing or decreasing the size of the waistband upper portion of the trousers.
-iThe strip 7 holds the waistband of the trousers in yieldmg engagement with the body of the wearer and prevents the trousers from slipping down, irrespective of the position of the body and, as 'hereinbefore stated, no other means than this strip 7 is equired to support or hold the trousers while being worn. i
By referring particularly to Fig, 5 it will beobserved that the tabs 8 while flexible are nonelastic, while the webbing 7 is elastie the ends of the tabs being stitched or otherwise permanently secured to the trousers, the hooks 9, for detachably securing and adjusting the webbing, being attached to the opposite ends of the webbing, where the tabs are connected, whereby the adjus able, flexible and self-conforming fastening, thus described is always in a convenient position'to be accurately adjusted and being located under the lining is completely covered and thus protected.
By providing the side openings 3, having separable fastenings, said openings may be readily opened to permit the trousers to be quickly removed or put on without necessitating the opening of the fly.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying draw ings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportions and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advanmenses edge downward and provided with suitable 3! closures, the front and. rear portions of the upper end of said trousers being continuous from placket to placket, the said trousers being provided on the inner face of its rear portion with. a series of; longitudinally spaced eyes, and an elastic strip having flex ends secured to the ible tabs at its opposite inner face of the rear portion of the trousers at points beyond iboth terminal. eyes of the series, and hooks secured to said strip at the inner ends of said tabs, the bills of said hooks-extending inwardly toward each other and adapted to be engaged with the eyes on the trousers.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
