THE NORRIS PETERS Co.. PHOTDLITHO" WRSHINGYON, D. c
GHARLES A. SWANSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DRINKING-WATER BAG.
Application filed March 19, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. SWAN- SON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drinkingater Bags, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to drinking bags, and the object of this improvement is to provide a simple and effective means for sealing a flexible water bag having an open top, said open top being provided to more easily cleanse the bag.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a water bag incorporating my invention, and Figs. 2 and 3 are enlarged sections taken on lines 22 and 3'3 respectively in Fig. 1.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, comprises a flexible bag el made of thick fabric or any suitable substance. The fabric making up bag 4 is preferably of a material which will permit the slow passage of water or other fluid therethrough in order to permit said water to evaporate and cause cooling of the contents of the bag. The top of bag 4: is formed open in order to provide means whereby the same may be easily cleansed. At the top of bag 4 is a cord 5 sewed in a hem around the top of the opening thereof. At one end of the opening in the bag is a bottle neck 6, having a conventional stopper 7. A. wire 8 formed substantially as indicated in Fig. 2 is placed around the top portion of the bag 4 immediately under the hem containing cord 5, such as indicated in Fig. 3. A slitted tube 9 having its slit extending longitudinally thereof, is placed over the hem containing cord 5 and wire 8, and is of such a size as to snugly fit the same, see Fig. 3, and bind the top of the bag, sealing the same. The tube 9 extends over the flat portion of the bag top and to the portion of the wire 8 which encircles the portion of the bag top encir- Specification of Letters Patent.

cling the neck 6. The portion around neck 6 is drawn taut by wire 8 and maintained in that condition by the tube 9, as will be readily understood, forming a tight joint between the neck and the bag top. In order to further make a tight joint at the juncture between the straight portion ofthe bag top and the portion thereof encircling the neck 6, a ring 10, or its equivalent is placed around the wire 8 at this point. The ring 10 presses the portions of the bag closely together, as indicated in Fig. 2, thereby insuring a sealed joint at this point also. This construction permits of an easy means for sealing the top of the bag and one which can be removed and replacedquickly and easily. The tube 9 may be slipped longitudinally over the loop of wire 8 which contains ring 11 to free the wire 8 and permit the removal of the latter to open the bag. The reverse order is instituted in closing the bag.
A cord 12 is secured to rings 10 and 11 to provide a means for carrying the bag when so desired.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A device of the class described comprising a bag open at its top end; an enlargement at the upper edge of said bag around said opening; a removable wire encircling said upper end of said bag, said wire being positioned below said enlargement and pressing the sides of said bag to gether; and a slitted tube over said wire binding the latter against said bag, sub stantially as described.
2. A device of the class described comprising a bag open at its top side; a cord secured to the top edge of said bag around said opening; a wire encircling said opening immediately below said cord; and a slitted tube over said wire and the top edge of said bag carrying said cord binding said Wire and cord to seal said opening, substantially as described.
3. A device of the class described comprising a bag open at its top side; a removable filling neck inserted in said opening at one end thereof; a Wire encircling the upper edge portion of said bag binding the portion of the latter engaging said neck closely in engagement therewith and the remaining portion of said upper edge portion fiat; and a slitted tube over said opening and binding the flat portion of said bag tightly sealing the latter substantially as described.
4. A device of the class described CO1I1- prising a bag open at its top side; a removable filling neck inserted in said open ing at one end thereof; a wire encircling the upper edge portion of said bag binding the portion of the latter engaging said neck closely in engagement therewith and the remaining portion of said upper edge portion fiat; means inserted between said bag and said wire at the juncture between said fiat portion "and the portion around said neck increasing the pressure on said bag by said wire at this point; and means clamping said wire and the fiat portion of said bag top sealing the same, substantially as described.
5. A device of the class described comprising a bag open at its top side; a removable filling neck inserted in said opening at one end thereof; a wire encircling -the upper edge portion of said bag binding the portion of the latter engaging said neck closely in engagement therewith and the remaining portion of said upper edge portion flat; a member inserted under said Wire at the juncture between the fiat portion of said bag top and the portion thereof encircling said neck; and a slitted tube over the flat portion of said bag top and a corresponding portion of said wire sealing said bag top and securely holding said neck, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
