Freak W def/I] ATTORNEY FRANK W. GER NY, OF MESA, ARIZONA.
BAG-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 1 1, 1918.
Application filed December 6, 1917. Serial No. 205,842.
To allauhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK IV. CERNY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mesa, in the county of Maricopa and State of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bag holders, and it relates more particularly to an improved device for holding bags open and moving them from place to place.
The primary object of my invention 1s to provide a device of this character which is thoroughly convenient and efficient m holding and carrying such bags as are used in the art of making jelly. 7
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which pos1- tively clamps the bag at opposite sides of its mouth, and in several places, so as to provide a Wide opening in the mouth of the ba being held open.
another object of the invention is to provide a. device of this character which is so simple of construction that it may be manufactured at the minimum cost.
Another object is to provide a device of this character in which all of its elements extend substantially in the same common plane so that a number of the devices may be packed into a comparatively small space for conveniently and economically shipping and storing them.
Other objects and advantages may become apparent to persons who read the following details of description in connection with the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a bag held open by means of one of my improved bag holders;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken along the line 22 of Fig. 1; and,
Fig. 8 is a horizontal sectional view through the bag along the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, illustrating the bag holder in plan. I
Referring to these drawings in detail in which similar reference characters correspond to similar parts throughout the several views, the bag A is shown merely for the purpose of illustrating the operation of my invention. The invention consists broadly of an open frame provided with pairs of oppositely disposed bag engaging elements and a handle whereby the open frame may be carried from place to place so as to carry the bag therewith.
For the sake of convenience and economy I have preferably formed my improved bag holder of a single length of wire, and in thus forming the device, I first bend the wire at its middle portion so as to form the free end of the handle 5; the handle elements are then each bent into a compound curve at 6; the wire is then twisted helically at 7, so as to secure two complemental sections of the wire together at the junction of the handle and frame; and the substantially rectangular frame is now formed by extending two sections of the wire in opposite directions, then forming the clamping elements'or loops 8, and finally securing the ends of the wire together at 9.
In the present embodiment of my invention, there are four of the clamping elements 8, each consisting of an elongated and outwardly extending loop which is open at its inner end, the sides of each loop being convergent inward and being spaced only enough to allow two thicknesses of the fabric of-the bag to be easily passed therebetween by a slight compression of the bag material and a slight separation of the clamping jaws forming the opposite sides of the loops 8.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 8, the handle 5 consists of an elongated loop which is closed at both ends and which is constricted at its inner end, thereby providing a pair of bag engaging elements or aws 10.
In utilizing or operating this device, the mouth of the bag A is passed through the open frame, and portions thereof are passed into the loops 8, as shown in Figs. 1 and 8, and then the top portion of the bag is turned outward over the frame and allowed to. depend therefrom as shown at 11, Figs. 1 and 3. A portion of the bag is then drawn laterally in the direction of the handle 5, passed through the wider portion of the loop or handle, and then drawn downward into the constricted portion; that is, between the clamping elements 10, as shown at 12. In thus drawing the portion 12 laterally, the portions of the bag which embrace the outer ends of the elements 8 exert an inward pressure of the latter while also pressing these clamping elements toward one another, and thereby tightening the clamping engagement thereof with the portions of the bag engaged thereby. This tightening and clamping eflect is maintained by the clamping elements 10 which hold the mouth of the bag taut around the bag-engaging elements 8.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided a device of this character which is thoroughly practical, convenient, efficient, economical and comparatively inexpensive, and which is particularly adapted for using in the art of jelly making.
Although I have described this embodiment of my invention minutely, my invention is not limited to these exact details of construction, but I may make such changes that do not constitute a departure from the inventive idea set forth in the appended claims.
What I claim as my invention is:
l. A bag holder formed of'a single wire secured together. at its ends providing a frame with integral inwardly opening and outwardly extending loops forming bag clamps and a handle integral with said frame.
2. A bag holder, comprising a single wire bent to provide a frame and an outwardly extending loop, the inner end of the said loop being formed to provide a bag clamp exterior to the frame opening into the loop, and said frame being closed and having loops integral therewith.
3. A bag holder and carrier formed of a single length of wire and comprising a handle having a constricted opening therethrough, and an open frame formed with outwardly extending and inwardly convergent loops adapted to engage a bag with the inner and outer surfaces thereof and to cooperate with the "constricted opening'of the handle for holding a bag substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
