GEORGE BULLOCK, 0F GRAND JUNCTION, COLORADO.
PARCEL-CARRIER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. S, 1914.
Application led April 1, 1914. Serial No. 828,653.
To all cli/omit may concern Be it known that I, Gnoaen BULLOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Grand Junction and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Parcel-Carrier, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to parcel carriers of a type which is particularly and specially adapted for use in carrying a number of parcels, books, etc., at one time.
An object of the invention is to provide a device for carrying a number of parcels, books, or other objects or articles at the same time, and provided with inclosing straps arranged to pass around the parcels, etc., so as to prevent movement thereof in any direction, thereby preventing any of the articles from slipping out.
Another object of the invention is to provide a parcel carrier comprising a suitable handle, and a base to which the handle is connected, in combination with a number of straps arranged to pass trai'isversely around the articles to be carried and transversely across the base, and another strap extending longitudinally over the base and around the articles, so that it is impossible for any of the articles to slip out or become detached from the carrier.
Other objects of general and specific na* ture will appear from the following detailed description, reference beingmade to the accompanying drawing in which I have illus trated a suitable and preferred embodiment of the invention, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a parcel having my invention connected thereto and illustrating the straps passing in different directions around the parcel and in engagement with the handle base, so that displace` ment of the straps is impossible. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the base as it is cut or stamped out of sheet metal, and before the ears for holding the straps are bent to their linal form. Fig. 3 is a. plan view of the handie and base after the base has been shaped in its linal form, with a number of straps in connection therewith. Fig. 4t is a sectional view substantially on the line 4*-1 of Fig. 3. Fig. is a sectional view on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4s.
The base l may be made of any suitable material such as sheet metal, or any other material that may be preferred. If the base be made of sheet metal it is preferably formed or stamped substantially in the form illustrated in Fig. 2. When so formed the base includes an ear or loop 2 at each end,`
and ears on opposite sides near the ends of the base. In addition the base may be provided with a number of ears on its sides intermediate of the ears 3, and in the embodiment illustrated there is a pair of ears llintermediate of the ears 3. After the sheet metal base has been stamped in the form illustrated in Fig. 2 the various ears 2, 3 and 4l are turned upwardly at right-angles to the base to the position illustrated in Figs. 3 and 'l. Each pair of ears constitute guides and holders for the straps which are intended to be passed around the parcels in dii'l'erent directions. For instance, there are two straps 5 passing through the ears 3 transversely of the base l and near the ends of said base, said straps being adapted to encircle the packages or parcels as illustrated in Fig. 1. ln addition there may be as many intermediate straps as there are pairs of ears it and in the form illustrated there is provision for one strap to encircle the parcels transversely of the base intermediate of the end straps The intermediate strap is illustrated at 5L in Fig. 3 and will be retained from displacement by the ears.
A suitable handle ti is retained by loops 7 connected to the base by brackets 8, the handle being supported at a distance from the base sullicient to enable seizure of the handle by the hand without discomfort from any of the upturned intermediate ears et. The end ears 2 constitute holders for a strap 9 passing longitudinally around the parcels and through the loops 7 over or under the transverse straps, as preferred.
A device constructed in accordance with the foregoing description is capable of use in a variety of ways. .For instance, a number of straps may encircle the parcels in one direction, and another strap may be employed to encircle the parcels transversely of the First-named straps. Thus, in the particular embodimcnt illustrated there may be three straps passing around the parcels in one direction, and a single strap passing around the parcels in another direction; or in the place of employing the full number of straps there may be used only two straps passing around the parcels in one direction, aided by a single strap passing around the parcels in another direction; or, if desired, a single strap may be employed to inclose the parcel in one direction, and be aided by a single strap inclosing the parcel in another direction. ln any use of the device all oi' the straps used are inseparably united with the base While said straps are around the parcels, so that it is impossible for the straps or base to become displaced.
lt Will be understood that there may be various modiiications in the speciiic form and arrangement of the device Without departing in the least from the principles of the invention.
l do not restrict myseli' to specific features of construction or arrangement, but l contemplate the use of equivalent variations in conformity with the preferences of the users or the purposes for which the devices are to be employed.
Having described my invention, what l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A parcel carrier, comprising' a base, a handle, a loop holding each end of said handle in connection with said base, a removable strap passing through said loops longitudinally ot said base between said handle and said base, and means independent of said loops preventing lateral movement of said strap on said base, and permitting longitudinal movement of said strap with respect to said base.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a base, a handle, a loop holding each end of said handle in connection With said base, a strap passing through said loops longitudinally over said base between said handle and said base, means independent of said loops preventing lateral movement of said strap on said base, and permitting longitudinal movement of said strap With respect to said base, longitudinally movable, straps extending transversely of said base, and means holding said last named straps in position.
3. ln a device of the character described, a base, loops connected to said base and arrangedto receive a strap extending longitudinally over said base, means on said base independent of said loops lior preventing lateral movement and permitting longitudinal movement of said strap, straps extending transversely or said base, and means on said base for preventing lateral movement and permitting longitudinal movement of said transverse straps, substantially as described.
4. i device of the character described, comprising a metallic base, slotted ears integral with said base near each end thereof, longitudinally movable straps passing through said ears transversely of said base,
loops extending above said base, a handle connected to said loops, a longitudinally movable strap extending over said base, and means at each end of said base preventing lateral movement of said last-named strap with respect to said base and permitting longitudinal movement of said strap, substantially as described.
A device of the character described, comprising a metallic base, up-turned ears integral with said base near each end thereof, straps passing over Vsaid base and reJ tained in position by said ears, loops connected to said base, a strap passing longitudinally over said base through said loops, means at each end of said base preventing lateral movement oi' said last named strap, and a handle connected to said loops.
6. A device of the character described, comprising a metallic base, a plurality oir' Lip-turned ears integral With the edges of said base near each end thereof, lip-turned ears integral with said base near the center thereof, straps passing through said ears and across the upper surface ot' said base, loops-connected to said base, a strapv passing through said loops longitudinally above said base,
means at each end of said base preventing,
lateral movement of said last named strap, and a handle pivotally connected to said loops.
7. ln a d vice of the character described, the combination oil a base, a plurality or' straps extending transversely across said base, means for preventing said straps from becoming disconnected from said base, loops connected to said base, a handle supported d loops, a longitudinally movable strap passing through said loops'transversely of said first-named straps, and means independent ol said loops preventing said lastnamed strap lrom becoming disconnected from said base, substantially as described.
8. ln a device of the character described, the combination of a base, a plurality'of straps extending transversely of said base and movable longitudinally, means in connection with said base for preventing lateral movement oi' said straps, loops connected to said base, a strap extending through said loops longitudinally oi' said base, ears through which said last-named strap eX- tends, and a handle supported by said loops above said base, substantially as described. vln Witness whereof, l have signed this specification in the presence of tivo subscribing witnesses.
