Description

w. RENNYSON.
Lime Kiln.
No. 111,874. Patented Feb. 14; 1871.
Euvmtnr. g
N. PETER& PNOTO'LITHOGRAPMER, WASHINGION, D C- UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM RENNYSON, OF NORRISTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHIMNEYS FOR LIM EKILNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l I 1,874, dated February 14, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM RENNYSON, of Norristown, in the county of Montgomery, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimneys for Limekilns; and do hereby declare that thetollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a. part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a chimney for limekiln, as will be hereinafter more fully' set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a perspective View of my improved chimney.
A represents the lower part of my chimney, made of suitable metal, in the shape of an inverted funnel, and of such size as to fit over and cover the aperture at the top of a limekiln. From the apex of the funnel A a tube, B, leads upward for a suitable distance, and the upper end of said tube is provided with a cap, U, from the center of which a rod, D, extends upward and connects with a lever, E. This lever is pivoted to an arm, G, projecting from the tube B, and a cord or rod, a, is attached to the other or outer end of said lever, by the use of which the cap 0 may be raised up from or put on the tube B.
On the sides of the funnel-shaped base A are handles b b, so that the chimney may be easily lifted off when so desired.
ing the coal.
The object of my invention is to secure the entire control of kilns during the production of lime.
Ordinary limekilns are open on top and frequently very troublesome, sometimes burning the stone almost to cinder, and at others just burning the outside, leaving the balance unburned.
My chimney or top placed upon any kiln will make a strong draft, and, consequently, a strong fire. The cap or damper on top can be used in regulating it; or, when the damper is closed, the fire can be held without consum- I intend them very heavy, and also so light that two or three men can pick them up and carry them from kilns without much trouble. I intend to make them all in one piece, with handles, so that men can get hold of them and move them without any difficulty, or have frame or skeleton standing with doors arranged on hinges, or made to fit so as tomake the top air-tight.
- Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ist The combination of the funnel-shaped base A, tube B, and cup or damper O, with its operating mechanism, all constructed. arranged, and operating substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of January, 1871.
WILLIAM RENNYSON.
