TO ALL WHOM IT MAY cononnu;
Be it known that I, JAMES R. WOODWORTH, of the town of Nunda, county of Livingston, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tewels and Smoke Pipes; and do hereby declare that 'the following is a full, clear, and e-xact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- I Figure 1 is a perspective view..
Figure 2, a sectional view.
Figure 3, an end view of the top.
Figure 4, end view of the bottom.
Figure 5 is a sectional view of a horizontal tewel for side-blast fires.
Figure 6 a perspective view of a section of smoke pipe. 7
The nature of my invention consists in constructing tewels so that they can be quickly and easily-cleaned from dirt. Also, a tongue of iron working inside to clear the air-holes when clogged with cinders and dirt, and to close the air-holes at pleasure, thereby regulating the blast to suit the workman. Also, a smoke pipe, of indefinite size, shape, or length, to set over the fire, to cause a draught of air to pass from an opening in the towel pipe or blowing apparatus up through the fire, to keep it from going out while the bellows o'r blower is not in motion, said pipe to connect with chimney or smoke pipe or not as the workman sees fit.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A is a cylinder, (the body of the tewel.) B, a pipe to receive the air from the bellows. C G are holes in the top M for discharging the air up into the fire. L is a rod, with prongs D D, or tongues, that fit the holes 0 C, and attached to the arm J, which is hung on a rod, H, which runs to the outside of the forge, where it is provided with a lever or crank, I. E is an arm on which is'hung the bottom F, and attached to the cylinder with a hinge, G, through which a rod passes to the outside of the forge to open and shut the bottom.
The operation is as follows: The tewel is set in the forge under the fire. When the fire or tewel is clogged with'dirt, a turn of the lever I throws the prongs D D up through the holes C C, and clears away or loosens the cinders so as to let the air pass freely. To keep the fire from going out, drop the bottom F and set the pipe, fig- 6, over the fire, thereby causing a draught of air up through the fire, and at thesame-time let out all the dirt that falls through from the fire. To regulate the blast, raise the rod L till it closes the air-holes to suit the workman.
The construction and operation of the side blast pipe or towel is as follows: Fig. 5 being a sectional View, P the end for receiving the air from the bellows, T the end for discharging the air into the fire; S a tongue or movable rod operated by a rod, V, passing through the arm X, whereby the tongue is forced out into the fire to clear away the cinders to give free passage to the blast, or to regulate the blast by shoving the tongue forward so as to close the hole at T to suit the operator.
I do not claim the cylinder, top nor bottom, but what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the'following:
1. I claim thedever E in combination with the bottom F and binge G, constructed and arranged substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. I claim the movahle moke pipe, fig. 6, in combination with the open tewel herein described, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
JAMES R.- WOODWORTH.
