Letters Patent No. 67,477, dated August 6, 1867 CHIMNEY-GAP.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I. M. ANDERSON, of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented a new and improved Ventilatotg and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andexa-ct description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present inventionrelates to a ventilator-cap or attachment for chimney-pots, the object of which is to promote and increase the draught through the chimney, and is especially adapted to chimneys which are so located that the external or atmospheric air is obstructed in its play about and around the chimney by a wall rising above the chimney upon one or more sides. In the accompanying plate of drawings, my improved ventilator is illustrated- Figure 1 being a side view of the same.
Figure 2, a central vertical section; and
Figure 3, a transverse horizontal section, taken in the plane of the line x x, fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A, in the drawings, represents my improvedventilator-cap or attachment for chimneys. This ventilatorcap A consists of a casing, 13, made of a cylindrical form at its lower portion C, or where applied or attached to the chimney-top, and from such portion upward of a gradually enlarging diameter or truncated-cone shape, terminating at its upper end with a plate or disk, D, secured in any proper manner thereto. The truncated conical-shaped portion of the ventilator-cap is constructed with aseries of vanes or wings, E, that extend from its lower end to its upper, with a curve in a spiral direction partially around the same, with the several vanes or wings E arranged to overlap each other, leaving open spaces F between them, as plainly shown in fig. 3 of the drawings. G, a pipe or tube extending up through the eehtrc of the ventilator-cap, from its lower and open end nearly to its top plate D, but terminating at a short distance below the same, (see fig. 2,) this tube forming an extension of the chimney on which the ventilator attachment is employed.
Having thus described in detail the construction of my improved ventilator attachment, in its use, the external or atmospheric air about the ventilator, as it enters through openings in its sides, is thereby given a circular motion or sweep around the inside of the cap and in a downward direction, consequently causing a vacuum at the upper and open end of the central tube G, which produces a suction up through such tube of the smoke and other products of combustion passing up through the chimney, which, entering the chamber about the centre tube, escape therefrom through its openings near the point where the air or draught enters.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent M 1. The spiral revolving wings E, overlapping each other, and leaving ati hpen space, F, between them, in combination with the cylindrical casing B, disk D, and central tube G, as herein set forth, for the purpose specified.
2. The spiral flanges G, constructed as described, causing a downward circular motion to the atmosphere surrounding the central tube G, in such a manner as to form a vacuum at its top, thereby increasing the draught of the chimney, as herein shown and described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this day of February, 1867.
I MICHAEL ANDERSON.
