IMPROVEMENT IN CHIMNEY-BOWLS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAYCONGERN:
Be it known that I, AUSTIN E. CLEMENT, of Wapakonetta, in the county of Auglaize, and in the State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chimney-Tops, and I do hereby dcclarc that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and
*to the letters of reference marked thereon, which make part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 representsa side view, partly in elevation and partly in section, of my improved chimney-top, and
Figure 2 a vertical transverse section of the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a top for chimneys or flues which will cause'the draught to be promoted, and prevent the wind from blowing therein and forcing down the smoke, and to this end my improve-t ment consists in attaching swinging wings to the open ends of a horizontal cylinder, incommunication with the chimney, by means of springs, and regulating their movement by adjustable screws.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a pipe, of suitable sheet metal, which is fastened to, the
chimney-top bymeans of a flange, a. The cross-section of the pipe, at its lower end, is of proper figure to cor respond with the opening in the chimney, and cylindrical at its upper end, to which the cylinder 13 is attached. This cylinder, which is composed of sheet metal, is open at its ends, and to the pipe A.
Plates or Wings, 0 G, are connected by the curved springs P D to the cylinder B, at a short distance from each of its ends, in such manner that when not acted upon by the wind, they will hang perpendicularly, or nearly so, and be at right angles to the axis ofthe cylinder. Bolts E E pass through slots in the lower parts of'the wings, for the purpose of regulating their motion, and work in nuts F F, attached to the inside of thecylinder. These bolts have their heads widened and flattened out, as shown in fig. 2, for the purpose of ail'ording a hearing upon the wings, and enabling the bolts to be turned by the fingers.
Spark-shields G G, pierced with a number of holes, are secured to the upper part of the inside of the cylinder 13, near its ends, for the purpose of deflecting any sparks that may arise from the chimney.
It will be seen that the'side and bottom edges of the wings are bent inwards towards the cylinder, to assist in preventing the entrance of currents of air therein.
When the wind blows against the wing C, it forces the lower portion thercof against the end of the cylinder, preventing the wind from entering, and the smoke escapes from the opposite end of the cylinder and at the. top
of the wing C. When the wind has ceased blowing, the action of the spring D restores the wing to its perpendicnlar position.
The operation of the wing C, when the wind blows against it, is similar. The bolts E E prevent the wings from being forced too far from the cylinder, and their range of motion can he graduated at will by turning the same in either direction.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Hanging the wings C C by the bent springsD D, in the manner and for the purpose set forth, in combination with the cylinder 13, bolts E E, and pipe A, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above-described improvements in chimney-tops, I have hereunto signed my name, this 26th day of April, 1868.
AUSTIN E. CLEMENT.
