Patented Nov; 29, 1870.

MELVILLE E. MEAD, OF DARIEN, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 109,642, (lated'NovemberZ Q, 1870.
IM PRQVEMENT IN CHIMNEY-TOPS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, MELVILLE E. Mean, of Darien, in the county of l airfield and State of Oonnec-' necticut, have invented new and improved Automatic Chimney-Top; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled irrthe art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
The present invention relates to a new and improved automatic chimney-top, consisting of a metallic hood pivoted to the chinmey, and operated upon by the wind striking against one or more vanes, whose supporting-rods extend through a staple in one or both sides of the said hood, and are pivoted to the chimney a sutlicicnt distance below to give an easy swing, and, by having a balance-weight attached to the end of each rod, it will necessarily be sensitive ot' 'tl1e least air stirring, thus always closing on the windward side and open on the lee side of the chimney, the construction and operation of which will be fully understood from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which represents a perspective view of my automatic chimney-' top.
[n this case, the letter A represents a metal hood, semicircular in shape, attached to or made in one with the sides or wings B B.
The brick-work of the chimneyis built up on the sides, so as to conform to the shape of the said hood.
The hood is pivoted, at (J, to the brick-work.
staple D, but propose using other connections, such as a pin and slot, or other suitable device, for the movement of the hood.
Thus, for example, when the wind blows in the direction indicated by the arrow it carries the vane over, and the vane-rod, passing through the staple D in the .side or wing of the hood, will cause the said hood to tilt and close the windward side, while the opposite side is opened wide so as to allow the smoke to pass out.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 1at.
ent-
The chimney-top, formed by the hood A, having sides or wings,' B B, and operated automatically by the weighted vane, substantially as Specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 17th day of October, 1870.
. MELVILLE E. MEAD.
Witnesses: L. S. MABEE, GEO. W Manse.
