Description

'H:. MARKTHALER Chimney Top.
Patented June 29, 1869.
than the upper edge of the same.
ifln'itml swa HENRY MARKTHALER, OF ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY.
Letters Patent No. 91,950, dated June 29, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHIMNEY-TOPS.
- The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and makingpart of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
The drawing represents a sectional elevation of my' improved chimney-top. r
This invention has for its object to provide an improved cap for smoke-stacks, ventilators, or lamps of all kinds, whether used on buildings, locomotives, cars, or other devices, in such manner that free egress of the escaping air or gases is provided, while the ingress through the top, of wind, .is successfully prevented.
The invention consists in the general arrangement of flanges around and within the discharge-opening, whereby the afore-mentioned results are obtained,
A, in the drawing, represents the cylindrical, prismatic, or otherwise-shaped upper part of a chimney, made of sheet-metalor other suitable material.
Above it, is supported, on projecting posts a a, a conical cap, B, which is at the base considerably larger than the top of the chimney, but somewhat higher From the lower edge of the cap 13, projects downward and inward, a flange, b, which reaches below the upper edge of the chimney-top, but whose inner edge is still some distance away from the chimney.
ithin the chimney-top A, and somewhat below the upper edge, is arranged an annular plate, 0, whose outer edge fits close against the sides of the chimney,
I while its inner edge is considerably lower than the outer, as shown.
An inverted conical cup, D, is suspended from wire rods, 0 c, or otherwise, within the chimney, some distance below the plate 0, its outer edge being some distance away from the sides of the chimney.
I prefer to make the sides of the chimney, where they are opposite the cup D, parallel with said'cap, as
shown. I
The ascending air or gases pass easily around the cup D, through the plate 0, into the cap B, whence they escape through the annular space left between the lower edge of the flange l) and the chimney. outer air, however, is cut and deflected away from said opening by the inclined sides of the cap and flange, b, so that it cannot enter the chimney. Should, however, some succeed in enteringthe chimney, it will, during the downward passage, be deflected upward by the flange G, and should some pass through the aperture formed by this flange, C, it will be caught in the cup D, and be again deflected upward.
\Vind can, there-tore, not afi'ect the ventilation or draught of the chimney, nor can rain enter the same. The device will consequently operate perfectly, and will always remain in good order.
Having thus described my invention,
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, isr A chimney-top, consisting of the body A, cap, 13, flange, b, inner annular plate, 0, and inverted cup, D, all combined and arranged substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
HENRY MARKTHALER.
