VENTILATOR AND CHIMNEY-CAP.
Application filed August 12, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT T. MERRILL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, Milwaukee county, Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ventilators and Chimney-Caps, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
.This invention has for its object to improve upon the ventilator and chimney cap construction covered by my United States Letters Patent No. 1,037,286, dated Septemher 3, 1912, by providing additional deflectors by means of the inner ends of the partitions or ribs to give an upward direction to the inflowing air and increase the inductive action upon the air or gas within the chimney or ventilator pipe.
Another object of the invention is to accomplish the improvements without materially increasing the cost of manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the ventilator and chimney cap as herein claimed and all equivalents.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which like characters of reference indicate the same parts in diiferent views:
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a ventilato-r and chimney cap constructed in accordance with this invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same inverted; and,
Fig. 3 is a detail View of one of the partitions or ribs showing in dotted lines the blank from which it is formed.
In these drawings 10 indicates a collar adapted to be secured to a draft tube or pipe of a ventilator or chimney, having riveted to its upper edge a number of radially disposed vertical partitions or ribs 11. These partitions are set on an incline and are notched at their lower edges to fit on the edg of the collar 10 and to form laterally bent ears 12 riveted to the collar on the outside thereof. An upper deflector ring 13 of the shape of a truncated cone is riveted to flanges 14 formed by bending up the upper edges of the partitions 11, while a lower deflector ring 15 of somewhat similar shape is riveted to flanges 16 formed by bending up the lower edges of said partitions. While the inner diameter of the upper deflector ring 13 is preferably less than the diameter of the collar 10, as shown, the 'inner di- Specification of Letters Patent.

ameter of deflector ring 15 is somewhat larger, leaving a space between them through which air may pass as indicated by arrows.
A. conical fluted cap 17 is secured to the upper deflector ring 13 so that the fluted portions thereof form a series of inclined radial air passages 18.
In so far as described the construction does not materially differ from that shown in my former patent referred to. It is, however, desirable to provide additional deflecting means for directing the air upwardly when it enters between the deflector rings and for this purpose th end of the partition 11 is bent to one side to form a wing19 meeting with and riveted to a similarly shaped wing 20 which projects in a similar manner from the next partition 11. Each partition 11 thus has one of the wings 20 riveted thereto for joining with the end 19 of the next partition to form a curved inclined deflector in the path of the current of air entering through the passageway between the partitions and between the deflector rings and directing it upwardly into the cap 17 and out through the passageways 18. This decidedly upward deflection of a strong current of air causes a material influence on the suction exerted in the smoke pipe or ventilator by the inductiv action, thus increasing the effectiveness of the device without materially adding to its cost.
Obviously the inclined deflectors may be formed otherwis than by the wings 19 and 20 but this is a most convenient construction and is at present preferred.
I desire it to be understood that this invention is not limited to any specific form or arrangement of parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a ventilator and chimney cap, having a collar, and a pair of conical rings connected by radial vertical partitions and mounted on the collar, the combination therewith of inclined deflectors above the interior of the collar and extending from one partition to the next.
2. In a ventilator and chimney cap, having a collar, vertical partitions secured thereto and positioned radially thereon, and upper and lower deflector rings mounted on the partitions, the combination therewith of inclined deflectors formed by the laterally bent ends of the partitions and disposed above the. interior of the collar and connecting with the next partitions.
3. In a ventilator and chimney cap, having a collar, radial partitions and conical deflector rings on the partitions, the combination of a wing on the inner end of each partition bent laterally toward the next partition, and having a wing attached to said next partition and bent laterally in the opposite direction and connected with the first mentioned ring forming together an inclined deflector above the interior of the collar.
