IMPROVEMENT IN CHIMNEV-TOP VENTILATORS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,647, dated June 30,1874, application lil-ed June 1, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J EssE I). KENNARD, of Barnesville, in the county of Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Top Ventilater; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to certain improvements on a chimney-top already patented byV me, as will be"l hereinafter more fully set forth.

In t-he accompanying drawing, Figure l is a plan view of a chimney-top embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same through the line x x, Fig. l.

The chimney-top, as heretofore patented by me, consists of a tube, A, with dan ges a. a and apron E around the lowercnd; a cup, D, with openings i 'i around the upper'part of the tube; and a conical cap O,"with downwardprojecting circumferential( band B, supported by arms el d above the upper end of the tube.

My present improvements consist ina crownband, F, which is secured or riveted to the conical cap O at the outer edge, sitting upright, so as to gather the wind in the right direction, increase the draft, and retain thc sparks.

In the lower edge of the cap C are holes b b, cut half out, and the metal pieces d punched and bent down inside, so as to form guards for said holes to retain the sparks, and also to increase the draft by throwing` the wind out near the band B, and not allowing the wind to enter the pipe from any direction, making an improvement upon this class of devices where the lips are bent outward and allow the sparks to pass outside of thev dome. Through the band B are inserted one or more half-round tubes or troughs, Gr, of any suitable size, open at the top. rIhis tube or these tubes allow a current of air to pass through and increase the draft, which is of great benefit in locomotive-engines.

I'Vhere this chimney-top is used on buildings, it ventilates the apartments through which the flues enter when the re is out of the ilues and chimney.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a chimney-top ventilator, the cap O, perforated at b, and having lips d. bent inward and downward, in combination with tlre band F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The band F and cap C, constructed as described, in combination with the open-'top pipe G, cup D, perforated at t', and the tube A, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
