IMPROVED CHIMN EY-TOP.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 45,403, dated December 13, 1864.

To all whom tt may concern:

Be it known that I, A. L. GESERICK, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Chimney-Top; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in 'which- Figure l is a vertical central section of my invention, taken in the line 00 .r, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a vertical central section of the same, taken in the line y y, Fig. 1.

This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in chimney caps or tops for the purpose of improving and rendering perfect the draft of the chimneys, whether the defect in the same arises from a faulty construction or an unfavorable situation.

The invention consists, substantially, in dividing the upper part of the chimney-cap or chimneytop into two compartments arranged relatively with an outlet and the main passage of the cap or top in such a manner that external drafts or winds will have a tendency to increase the draft of the chimney instead of diminishing it, and rain or snow at the same time be prevented from passing down into the chimney.

The chimney cap or top is composed of a main flue, A, which may be of metal, baked clay, or any suitable material, and of rectangular, cylindrical, or other form. This part A is formed or provided with a horizontal flange, B, which is at a short distance above its lower end, and rests upon the top of the chimney, the lower part of A fitting within the latter. Besides this flue A, there is a top or upper portion, 0, which is secured permanently to A, and is considerably wider than the latter, as shown in Fig. 1. This portion 0 is constructed with two passages, D l), which are formed by means of a vertical partition, a, and an opening, b, which extends eutirely through (J, and has a semicircular bottom, 0. The lower ends of the passages D l) communicate with the external air, as shown at d d in Fig. 1, and the opening I) atits up per part communicates with D D, as shown at e e. From the above description it will be seen that in case oflateral drafts the wind will pass up through the passages D D, entering at d d and e e, as indicated by the blue arrows, and these currents of air through D D will have a tendency to increase the draft in A instead of diminishing it, while any rain or snow that may fall into the chimney will be prevented from passing into A, thesameescapingthrough the opening b and at the lower ends of I) I).

In practice it would perhaps be desirable to have the portion G of the chimney top or cap divided, as shown atf, and connected at one end by a hinge, g, in order to render the passages l) D accessible for cleanin I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A chimney top or cap composed of a main portion, A, and an upper portion, (J, the latter being provided with an opening, b, and a partition, a, arranged to form the passages I) 1), which communicate with the opening I), the main part A, and the external air, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
