Description
AUNITED STATES GEORGE G. THOMAS, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHIMNEV-COWLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,887, dated July 11, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE G. THOMAS, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ventilator; and I do 'hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention has for its object the production of an improved ventilator; and consists in certain details of construction which will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawing, Figure l represents a side elevation of my improved ventilator or chimneytop; Fig. 2, a central sectional elevation of the same.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and manner of operation.
A represents the body of the ventilator, consisting of a tube or cylinder of any proper construction, which is formed at its upper end with an outwardlycurving edge, a, as shown. B represents a conical cap set over tube A, and held v by any suitable supports, the outer edger of which is in line vertically with the outer edge a of the tube A, a suflicient space, however, being left between the tube for the free passage ofthe air. C represents a protecting-shell, consisting of the parts c c, which incline inwardly from the point c in an upward and downward direction, as shown. This shell is so held by suitable supports upon the tube A as to cover and protect the opening x between the edges ofthe tubeA and the cap B, and
thus prevent the entrance of the wind therein D represents an upper cap, provided with an in4 clined iiange, cl, and vertical iiange d', which latter surrounds a central opening, m. This cap is held by suitable supports over the cap B, as is clearly shown in the drawing. E represents an upper shell, substantially similar in its construction to the shell G, the upper edge of which is 1ocated in a line horizontal, or nearly so, with the upper edge of the ca-p D. a2 represents an opening between the shells E and (l.
By means of this construction the ingress of air is eiiectu ally prevented, while abimdant mean s are provided for its egress; no matter from what quarter the wind may blow, it cannot enter the tube, but only serves to increase the outward draught. This ventilator may also be used for a chimney-top, if desired.
Havin g thus fully describedmy invention,wl1at I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The ventilator described, consisting of the tube A with Haring top a, caps B and D, shells C and E, combined and arranged as described.
2. The combination ofthe shells O and E with the cap B,.the shells being separated from each other to forman air-passage, and the cap B being arranged to protect the opening of the tube A, as described.
This speciiication signed and witnessed this 1st day of May, 1871.
GEO. G. THOMAS. Witnesses: v
