Description

ibtited tatw `GEORGE H. PERKINS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 104,193, dated Juncld, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN METALLIC CAPS FOR. TIN CANS.
The Schedule referred to `in these Letters Patent and making part of the same Mits- To dll whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE H. PERKINS, of the city of Brooklymin the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mouth-Pieces or Caps for Metallic Cans; and I hereby declare in .what manner the same is to be constructed.
In order that the public may be'enabled to understand the nature of my said improvement, and that those who are skilled in the tinsmiths art may lconstruct the same, I will describe it as follows,.to wit:
Figure 1 is a vertical section of the top of a can having my improved mouth-piece or plug, A and A', with the ring R attached to the under side of' the salme;
Figure 2 is a top view of my thin sheet-metal cap, hood, or plug A and A' as shown when looking down upon the top thereof.
I am fully aware that my patent, No. 100,180, and dated on the 22d of February, 1870, fully covers the screw-ring, in combination with a thin sheet-metal jacket passing under and around the screw-ring or mouth-piece, so as to consttutea thin sheet-metal plug upon the inner or under side" of the throat of the tin or other can. Hence, my present application 4is an. improvement upon the said patent, from the fact that I do away with the male'screwplugand secure the ring R, fig. 1, to the under side f the cap' A and A', in suchl a manner that the thin sheet metal constitutes the outer cap and only plug to the throat of the can, and which is on or about the level with the top of the can. And, by means of the above improved arrangement of the thin sheet-metal cap or plug A and A', I am enabled to use a plain ring in lieu of thescrew-ring R, if preferred, and hence increase the rigidity and durability of the throatof the can atless labor and expense than any of the devices now in common use. v
The novelty of myimprovement consistsin the arrangement of the thin sheet-metal cap' or plug A and A', having a plain or threaded ring, R, secured to the under side thereof', to avoid the use of an additional "male plug, at the same time producing a perfect seal Aor plug to the mouth of the can.; therefore,
' substantially as described and shown in the drawing. Intestimon'y whereof I hereunto subscribe my name in the presence of two witnesses.
GEO. H. PERKINS.
