FFICE.
PATENT EDGAR G. NICHOLS, OF BEAUFORT, SOUTH CAROLINA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HATA-VENTILATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1203163, dated October 24,1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR G. NICHOLS, of
the town of Beaufort, in the county of Beaufort and State of South Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ventilators for Hats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, in whichf designates iillet, and p p projections thereof; c crown, r rim, and I) lbody ofthe hat.
Figure l is a perspective View of hat with ventilator attached. Fig. 2 is a full-sized perspective of portion of fillet, having projections of the saine material. Fig. 3 is an elevation, the fillet having metallic projections.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Make a Vfillet of suitable material and size, (leather of one-half by one-quarter inch will do 5) it must be just large enough to come down on the head as far as hat should come 5 make projections on the upper edge of the fillet of the same or other material, and lfasten the projections of the iillet to the lower edge ofthe hat at the angle where the rim joins the body of the hat. They may be fastened by tying with thread.
To use the ventilated hat thus formed, set it upon the head; the openings between the projections of the illet will allow free access of air to the head'to prevent overheating; and a few small holes, if made in the crown of the hat, would increase the draught. On a cold day the ventilator may be detached and the hat brought down upon the head in the ordinary style.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The ventilator herein described, formed of a iillet fixed below the hat, having' openings through the upper edge of the llet, or between it and the hat, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
