SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 789,301, dated May 9, 1905.
Application filed July 13, 1904. Serial No. 216,308.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM H. VANCE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Ventilators; and 1 do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
il'ly invention relates to improvements in hat-ventilating devices, my object being to provide a device of this class which shall be simple in construction, economical in cost, reliable, durable, and efficient in operation; and to these ends the invention consists of the features hereinafter described and claimed, all of which will be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a section taken through a hat equipped with two of my improved ventilating devices, one being located on each side, one being shown in section and the other in elevation. I Fig. 2 is a face view or a view of the device as seen from the inside of the hat, the crown of the latter being broken away. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar section showing a modified form of construction. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the device, showing still another form of construction.

Let A designate the crown of a hat to the rounded by this flange is bent inwardly to form a recess or shallow chamber, in which a disk O is movably mounted.
This disk is provided with perforations O, adapted to register with the perforations A in the crown of the hat and also with perforations B of the plate B. The disk O is provided with a short lug G which passes through a slot B", formed in the part B, to permit the adjustment of the disk, whereby its perforations are thrown into or out of register with the perforations in the crown of the hat and the plate B, as circumstances may require.
in the form of construction shown in Fig. 4 the recessed part of the plate will be designated B. This plate is provided with an interior groove adapted to receive the disk C, which may be pressed into the groove by virtue of the yielding capacity of a disk, which may be composed of celluloid or other suit able material adapted to bend or yield sufliciently to enter the groove of the plate. By virtue of this construction a shallow space 1) is left between the crown of the hat and the disk, and the latter is permanently connected with the recessed plate, so that it will remain in position before the plate is applied to the crown of the hat. It is revoluble in the recessed plate and is substantially of the same construction as shown in Fig. 3.
In the form of construction shown in Fig. 5 the disk is connected with the recessed plate by means of a centrally-located rivet E, upon which the disk is adapted to rotate freely for the purpose of throwing the orifices in the plate, the disk, and the hat-crown into or out of register, as may be desired.
From the foregoing description the use and operation of my improved ventilating device will be readily understood. As heretofore stated, the device is attached to the crown of the hat on the inside in any suitable manner. If it is desired to ventilate the hat, the disk C will be adjusted to cause its orifices to register with those of the plate and the hatcrown. If the weather is cold and it is not desired to ventilate the hat, the disk is adjusted to close the vcntilating-orilices.
Attention is called to the fact that one or more of my improved devices may be applied to ahat, as may be desired. In Fig. 1 two are illustrated; but ordinarily one will be suliicient.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A hat-ventilating device comprising a perforated recessed plate having a slot located beyond its center, and a perforated disk located in the recess of the plate and loose'therein, said disk having a projection located outside of its center and passing through the slot of the plate to facilitate the adjustment of the disk to bring the perforations of the disk and plate into or out of register with each other for the purpose stated, the plate being adapt-- ed to be connected with the crown of a hat, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a hat provided with a perforated part, of a perforated plate applied to the perforated part of the hat in such a manner that the perforations of the hat and plate register, the said plate being bent inwardly to form a recess or chamber, and a perforated disk located in the said recess and occupying a position between the perforated part of the plate and the perforated part of the hat, the said disk having a projection passing through a slot formed in the said plate outside of its center, the said slot limiting the movement of the plate for the purpose of l to the hat, the portion of the plate surrounded by the flange being perforated and occupying a different plane from the flange, the-flange and perforated part being separated by an olfset forming a recess, a perforated disk loose in said recess and having a projection outside of its center and passing through a slot formed in the perforated plate, the length of the slot being such that when the projection is moved to the end of the slot in'one direction the perforations in the plate are closed by the disk, while when the projection is moved to the opposite extremity of the slot, the perforations of the disk and plate are made to register for the purpose set forth.
