JOHN COMES, OF RUSHVILLE, OI-IIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES THOMAS, OF SAME PLACE.
STOVE PI PE VE-NTl LATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,809, dated March 10, 1885.
Application filed February 18, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN COMES, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Rushville, in the county of Fairfield and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Stove Pipe Ventilator, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in stove-pipe ventilators; and the object is to to provide a device of the kind named, which is of the simplest construction and made at the lowest possible cost, yet practically effective for the purpose intended.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a 1 part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side view of ajoint of stove-pipe having my improvements affixed. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view taken through the line mac of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken through the line 3 y of Fig. 1.
The letter A represents a section or joint of stove-pipe having formed therein a series of apertures, B, and also having formed therein the longitudinal slot F, for the purpose of receiving the inwardly-projecting lug or car of the movable register, hereinafter described.
The letter O represents the movable register or band, formed with a series of apertures or openings, G, so arranged therein that the move ments of the band shall cause the apertures in the pipe to be opened or closed. On one edge of the movable band or register is formed an inwardly-proj ecting lug or car, E, which, when the parts are op crativcly connected, sets within 5 the horizontal slot F, and serves the double purpose of sustaining the register or band in position upon the pipe vertically, and as a means for limiting the movement of the register about the pipe, as it may be desired to open 0 or closethe apertures madein the latter. This band or registeris formed with the finger-holes D, secured together substantially as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, this finger-hold serving as means for turning the register.
The operation is apparent, the register being secured about the pipe, substantially as shown, may be opened and closed, as desired, being sustained in vertical position by the lug or car resting within the horizontal slot, and adapted to be moved in open or closed position by means of the finger-hold, its movements being limited by the length of the slot in connection with the lug or car extended therein.
I am aware that heretofore there has been made a stove-pipe ventilator consisting of a section of pipe provided with a series of apertures for the admission of air and having annular beads formed thereon. a flanged truncatedhollow cone, open at both ends, of smaller diameter than the section of pipe titted within the pipe by means of its flange entering a groove on the inner surface of the section, and an annular slide provided with openings corresponding to those in the pipe fitted on the eX- 6 terior of the section and formed with a pro jeotion for operating the slide. I am also aware thata device ofthe kind named has been made, consisting of a section of pipe provided with perforations, an outside ring or band provided with corresponding perforations, and strengthening rings or stays arranged above and below the ventilator-band and seated in grooves formed in the pipe. Itherefore make no claim to stove pipe ventilators of these construc- 7 tions; but
\Vhat I claim as my invent-ion, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The improved stove-pipe ventilator consisting of a section of stove'pipe formed with a series of apertures, B, and a horizontal slot,
F, and a movable band or register, O, formed with a series of apertures, G, and having an inwardly-projected lug or car, E, and fingerhold D, all arranged and combined substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
, JOHN COMES.
