fiiniith fittev V a Letters Patent N0. 113,245, ,d'ated April 413871.
IMPROVEMENT IN DAMPERS FOR CHIMNEYS The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent: and making part of the same.
I, PETER BAKER, of Oakland, in the county of Al leghany and State of Maryland, have invented an Improvement in Automatic Dampers for Chimneys, of which the following is a specification.
The natureof my invention consists incertain mode of suspending over chimneys,-upon a pendentwire and fusible key, a conical damper that will fall into the mouthof the chimney when the heat from the burning soot shall melt the key or support.
Figure 1 shows the device in section.
Figure 2 is a side elevation.
Figure 3 shows thedamper after ithas fallen into the month of the chimney after a fire.
I construct a sheet-iron section, F, of circular or rectangular shape, to fitth e chimney; On this section I fasten three or more strips to support the covering or roof.
From this I suspend a double wire, 0; also a similar wire, D, to steady the damper A when it is suspended upon 0.
The cone A is constructed of sheet-iron, large enough to, prevent its falling down the ohimney when' it drops, and has at the small apex an aperture through which the wire 0 is passed.
The conical'damper A is suspended upon the wire (1 and held by the key B. l
Thekey B is composed of a fusible alloy that will melt at any desired degree of heat. Therefore, when the chimney becomes heated by the burning soot, the I key or fulcrum B melts, and the cone A falls into the bined with the chimney, in the manner and for the purpose as set forth.
