WILLIAM W. SCHENKEE, 0E NEW YORK, N. Y.
WATERPROOF CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 17, 1914.
Application led October 30, 1913. Serial No. 798,207.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. SCHEN- EER, a citizen of the United States of America, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVaterproof Cases, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which-it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to waterproof cases, in the present showing being designed for use by bathers, hunters, sailors, and the like who deliberately go or are accidentally thrown into water, and may contain, as shown, cigarettes, matches, and coins, or it may be designed for women and contain such toilet articles as appeal to the sex.
It has been my experience that, when bathing. I have desired a smoke but this has required that I return to the dressing room for the smoking materials, thereby depr1ving myself of the comforts of the Water for a considerable time, and it was in order to permit such enjoyment of bathingand smoking at the same timethat my invention was conceived.
My invention is fully set forth in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the same reference characters are used to designate the same parts in each of the views, and in whichr- Figure l is a View of my invention open to disclose the contents; Fig. 2 is a central, horizontal, section therethrough in closed position; Fig. 3 is a central, vertical, section therethrough in closed position; Fig. 4 is au enlarged, fragmentary, detail of one form of lock which I employ; and Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
In the drawings forming a part of this application I have shown a case comprising two hinged members aand b, the hinge being shown at a2, and I also provide a lock or catch@ for said inembers.
ber may contain cigarettes a as shown.
The member b is also provided with a cover b2 having a spring hinge b3, and I prefer tov divide this member into two compartments b4 and b5 for use as a match and a coin receptacle, respectively, and it will be noted that the cover b2 is somewhat smaller than the member b to provide room for a frame b which is rabbeted on its edges to receive and hold a rubber or other gasket b" which constitutes the waterprooiing element between the members when the case is closed, the edges of the member a being forced into the gasket by means of the catc ythrough the opening in the lug c6 and the handle c3 turned through an arc of a circle in the direction of the pitch of the screwthread, the inner side of the head engaging the lug c and the screw-thread drawing the members tightly together in such manner as to force the edge of the member a into the rubber gasket.
It will thus be obvious that I provide a hermetically sealed and water proof case which is simple in construction, easy of opening and closing, and well adapted to the purposes for which it is intended and, while I have shown a particular shape of case, I do not limit myself thereto, nor to the details of construction, nor to the specific uses to which it may be put, as many uses therefor may be conceived.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isz- A waterproof case, comprising two hinged members, means for locking the same in closed position, a rabbeted frame secured in one of said members, and a resilipresence of the subscribing Witnesses this ent gasket held by said frame along the edges 27 th day of October 1913. of said member and adapted to impnge on the edge of the other member to exclude WILLXAM W' SCHENKER 5 Water. Witnesses:
In testimony that I claim the foregoing Rom* B. ABBOTT,
as my invention l have signed my name 1n J. C. LARSEN,
