Description
MINNIE BELBER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
WABJDROBE-TBUNK.
tisanes.
Specification of Letters Patent.
ltlatented Apr. t3, tuto..
Application filed August 4, 1914. Serial No. 854,913.
T0 all ttf/wm it may concern Be it known that MINNIE BELBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia,Y and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful improvement in Vardrobe- Trunks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specilication.
The object of my invention is to increase both the durability and utility of a wardrobe trunk. Such trunks are, like the older type of trunk, composed of two compartments hinged together, but, unlike the older type of trunk, are adapted to be set up on edge and used as a wardrobe. To this end one compartment is usually provided with sliding or hinged drawers, while the other compartment is provided with eXtensible clothes hangers and is closed by means of a door hinged at the outer vertical edge of the compartment. rlhis door is subject to considerable wear and strain due to outward pressure of the garments within the compartment which it closes as well as to causes arising from other incidents of its use, the result of which is to often crack the door or to warp it so that the fasteners carried thereby fail to properly aline with the complementary orifices .in the frame of the compartment.
The object of my invention is to reinforce the door in such manner as not only to render it strong and durable but also to add a highly useful feature to the trunk, namely, a means whereby the lower part of the human ligure may be reflected in order that the user may determine the iit and appearance of garments where no stationary full length mirror is available. This is of especial advantage to travelers whose hotel apartments are usually equipped only with the usual bureau mirror.
A. preferred embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a trunk embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged horizontal section through a part of one compartment of the trunk and the door for closing the same, the door being shown in an open position. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the last named compartment and door and a part of the other compartment, the door being shown closed.
rlhe body of the trunk is composed of the' compartments a and I), the former being preferably equipped with drawers c and the latter with garment hangers (not shown). The compartment is provided with a door, which may be of any desired construction. I. have shown a door composed of a narrow leaf (Z hinged to the outer vertical edge of compartment and a wide leaf e which constitutes the main part of the door and is hinged to the outer vertical edge of the leaf d; the construction being such that the door may be swung to one side of the trunk out of the way if so desired. Near the outer vertical edge of the door is a fastener 7 comprising two vertically movable rods adapted to engage orifices in the compartment b. Applied preferably to the inner face of the leaf CZ of the door is a thin metal plate g. Preferably this plate is tacked near its outer margin to the door, the points of the tacks or rivets z' being concealed by a cover Iz.. Preferably the plate is made of Zinc which is nickel plated to provide a reflecting surface. A frame y', which may be of wood, is then applied to the plate g in such manner that the inner portions of the frame overlap the edges of the plate while the outer portions of the frame extend outside the edges of the plate and are secured to the door by rivets ic. By this construction the plate is securely held in position on the door. rllhe frame j acts to conceal the tacks z' and the parts of the metal plate immediately adjacent thereto, which are distorted more or less in driving through the tacks. The frame also act-s, independently of the plate, to hold the' plate to the door. |The frame also imparts a pleasing and ornamental appearance to the plate so that the frame and plate present the appearance of an ordinary mirror and perform an analogous function. rlhe door cannot possibly crack or warp, the metal plate, which covers the major surface thereof, imparting to the door a rigidity that maintains it intact and in shape and preserves the alinement of the fasteners with its complementary engaging orifices.
Having now fully described my invention, what l claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
l. A wardrobe trunk comprising compartments hinged one to the other, a door hinged to and adapted to close one of said compartments, a metal reinforcing plate secured to one face of the door and spaced from the edges thereof, a frame surrounding and overlapping the edges of the plate Vand secured t0 the door-,and-affzistening dev-ice mounted on the door between one edge thereof and the adjacent edge of the frame. 2. A Wardrobe trunk comprising compartmentsfhinged one `to the other, a door hinged to and adapted to close one ofsaidgeompartments, a metal plate extending throughout thegmajor `partof the height of thedoor, the :edges of vsaidjplate being :spaced from the edges of `the door, a frame concealingr the edges .of fthe plateland overlying portionsfof thedooriontside of and adjacent toftlieedges 0fthe plate, and securing devices Aconnectingvithe frameand door outside the edges of the plate.
3. A yWardrohetrunk comprising compartments hingedone to the othereaidoor hinged to and adapted toclose one of said compartments, a metal'gplate applied toene face of thedoor, the edges of said plate beingspaced from the edges offthedoor, means fastening l the lplate-near itsedges to the do0r,;aframe appliedto the plate and door and overlaptothe door, a cover on the side of the door opposite the plate, a frame applied to the Vplate and :overlapping both the edges there of andportions of the door outside of and adjacent fto Ithe plate, said cover and door both acting/to conceal saidfastening devices, and securing devices connecting the frame and-dooroutside theedges-ol the plate.
In testimony of which invention, I have hereunto "set my hand, at Atlantic City, on this 31st day of July, 1914.
