Description
G. W. ROBERTS.

APPLICATION rum) sov.14. 1913.

WITNESSES ATTORNEYS UB ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. ROBERTS, OF WILLOW GROVE, PENNSYLVANIA.
POULTRY COOP OR CRATE.
Application filed November 14, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. ROBERTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Willow Grove, in the county of Montgomery, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Poultry Coop or Crate, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a poultry coop or crate which is composed of a body and a door therefor, the latter being adapted when open to occupy a position below the plane of the top of the body and so rest flat or approximately flat, instead of obliquely, as heretofore, whereby it does not project above the top of the body, the advantages of which will be hereinafter set forth.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific arrangement and organization shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a top plan view of a coop embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal horizontal section thereof on line :v-ac Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal horizontal section of a portion showing the door of the coop in open position. Fig. 4! represents a side elevation of a portion of the coop.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings :1 designates the body of a coop or crate for poultry or other purposes, and 2 designates the door or lid thereof, said body being formed of suitable slats and rounds, rods or bars which of themselves are of usual construction.
3 and 4 designate the top slats of the body, and 5 designates the central slat thereof.
6 and 7 designate the top rounds which are connected with the slats 3, 4, and 5 respectively, the door 2 being hinged to one of the rounds 6, as at 8, whereby it can be raised and thrown back so as to be opened and thus admit access or entrance to the interior of the body, as also well known, it being noticed that said slats 7 are back of the opening occupied by said door in the Specification of Letters Patent.

closed position of the latter. The portions of the side slat 4 and central slat 5 opposite to the door are extended downwardly forming the offsets 9, thus rendering said portions of greater depth than the remaining portions thereof, and the rounds 7 are connected with the said offsets, whereby they are below the plane of the rounds 6, some of which latter being connected also with the central slat, as evident above the plate of the slats 7, as most clearly shown in Fig. 3. The slats 7 are thus depressed as regards the rounds 6 and door 2 and so form the pocket 10 which is rearward of the hinge of the door, consequently, when the door is to be opened, it is raised and then turned back into said pocket and rested on the rounds 7, occupying said pocket in a plane substantially level with that it occupied in its closed position, consequently, the door may be opened to full extent describing a half circle and so enter the pocket comparatively fiat therein not being obstructed in its descent to such position by said rounds 7, whereby it presents no obstructions above the top of the coop that may catch on surrounding objects, or be in the way of the hands of the poultry man. Then when coops are piled one on the other, the open doors do not project above its bodies, and so the coops may lie flat and steady one on the other.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. A coop of the character stated having on its top slats and rounds, and an entrance opening between portions of said slats, and other rounds connected with other portions of said slats back of said opening in a plane below that of the latter forming a pocket, and a door adapted to close said opening, and when opened to occupy said pocket and rest level therein or comparatively level in the same alinement as when it occupies its closed position.
2. A coop of the character stated having at the top, longitudinal slats and transverse rounds, the latter having their ends secured to said slats and an opening between said slats and rounds, and a door adapted to close said opening, and portions of the slats back therein in the same alinement as when ccof said opening having downwardly extendcupying its closed position.
ing offsets, and rounds connected with said GEORGE W. ROBERTS. offsets in a plane below said opening form- Witnesses:
ing a pocket into which said door may be JOHN A. WIEDERSHEIM,
swung and rest level or comparatively level N. BUssINGER.
