GARBAGE RECEPTACLE.

WiZZzb/ra attouwq UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM O. BUNNELL AND QUINCY A. GATES, OF WILKES-BARREL PENNSYLVANIA.
GARBAGE-RECEPTACLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 13, 1916. Serial No. 119,874.
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that we, VILLIAM O. BUN- nnnn and QUINcr A. GATES, citizens of the United States, and residents of lVilkes- Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Receptacles, of which the following is a specification. 7
The present invention relates to the class of metallic shipping and storing vessels and has particular reference to new and useful improvements in garbage receptacles.
The primary object of our invention is to provide a new and improved type of garbage receptacle which is for all practicable purposes odorless.
Another object of our invention is to provide a garbage receptacle having a novel type of closure adapted to permit one to deposit garbage within the receptacle and also serving to close the receptacle after garbage has been deposited therein to prevent the escape of odors and exclude insects such as flies and the like from access to the contents of the receptacle.
A further object of our invention is to provide a garbage receptacle of the class described which is simple in construction, strong and durable, cheap to manufacture and effective in use.
Other objects and advantages to be de rived from the use of our improved garbage receptacle will appear from the following detail description and the claims, taken with an inspection of the accompanying drawin in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a garbage receptacle embodying the improvements of our invention; and
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, wherein similar characters of reference designate like and corresponding parm throughout the various views, 1 designates the body of our improved garbage receptacle, the same having the usual bottom 2 therein. The body of the receptacle is open at the upper end and is provided with a closure 3 hinged at 4 to the peripheral wall of the body. The closure 3 is provided with a handle 5 which facilitates opening of the same.
A supplemental opening 6 is provided in the peripheral wall of the body 1 adjacent the upper free end thereof, said opening being closed by a curved door 7 having a knob or handle 8 and mounted in a guide frame 9 carried by the outer surface of the body 1. A housing 10 is mounted within the body, said housing having the bottom open and formed with an oflset portion 11. A shaft 12 is mounted transversely of the body, extending through the housing the free end of the shaft being bent as at 13 to form a crank portion having a handle 14 thereon. A rotatable partition 15 is carried by the handle and movable with the shaft 12, said partition having wing portions 16 oppositely disposed and formed with flanges 17. The curved flanges and the oflset 11 engage to render the receptacle practically airtight. The normal closed position of the partition is as shown in Fig. 2, and assuming that it is desired to deposit garbage or the like within the receptacle the door 7 is opened and the garbage poured upon the partition, the weight of the garbage causing the partition to swing to a vertical position depositing the contents thereof into the receptacle. The partition is moved to closed position by means of the crank 14.
We desire to lay particular stress upon the simplicity of the device of our invention and it will be readily seen that the escape of odors from the receptacle is practically impossible when the closure partition is in the position shown in Fig. 2. Attention is also directed to the fact that the receptacle of our invention need not be employed strictly as a garbage can since the same may be as readily adapted for use as an ash can or any other container of the class referred to. It will be apparent that the housing occupies but one third of the diameter of the body 1.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that aclear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of our invention may be had, and while we have shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure, we desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a garbage receptacle the combina- 'tion of the body having an inlet opening adjacent the upper end thereof, a closure for said opening, a housing in said body oominunicating with the opening and having an open bottom, a rotatable partition arranged across said open bottom, means forrotating said partition from outside of the body, an offset portion on the lower edge of the housing, and flanges on said partition adapted for engagement with the off-set portion of the housing, and the' adjaoent wvall of the casing when the partition is horizontally disposed to make the device normally air ti ht.
2. A garbage receptacle of the class described comprising a cylindrical body having an open top, a closure for the same, said body being provided with the supplemental inlet opening adjacent its upper edge, a closure for said inlet slidably mounted on the outer i vall of the body, a housing Within WILLIAM o. BUNNELL. QUINCY A. GATES.
