Application filed Inna 18, 1906. fie 'ial No. 322,206.
To all whom it may concemi Be it known that I, HARRY L. SCIIELLEN- Bane, a-citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michi- 5 an, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Garbage Receptacles, of
' which the following is a specification, reference bein had to the accompanying drawwhic form a part of this speci ation. rly'invention is designed to provide a novel garbage receptacle and it consists of.
the construction, combination and arrangement of devices and appliances hereinafter specified and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
-Figure 1 is a view partly in vertical section and partly in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a'view in vertical section on the line 2--2, Fig. l. 3 is a View in horizontal section on the line 33, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detailyi'ew in side elevation showing features of the device.
The aim of my invention is to provide a garbage receptacle that shall efiectlvely prevent the presence of unsanitary and other unsstactory conditions, which will prevent, in: I the access of unauthorized parties 'ther'einto, which will prevent the garbage ems bein removed, or portions of it thrown wless parties, and which shall be to' the hillest extent wholesome, cleanly, and which shall prevent dissetion of unlt be understood that in man places children and others go about the all ys with their garbage carts, taking from the garbage receptacle such portions as they may desire, and scattering more or less of the garba e about the pres, and highways, obvious y resultinginunpleassnt and unsanitary conditions in various ways. My intention is designed to prevent the possibility of such con- -The garbage receptacle within the scope of my invention ma be made ofany' desired size, eitherforsing eoccupants of premises, for hotels,"a nd hosp tals, etc, or for the common use of various occupants, as for example the occupants of a terrace or apartment building. flhe receptacle illustrated herewith was various occupants of the premises, as for the use of several tenants of a terrace, but I do notlimitmyselfsolelythcreto. Accordingly, in the instanceillustrated herewith, a repre- 53 cents the oi the recepthclawhich for :theuse, oi se eral families, more particrly, I
more particularly designed for the Iusc of' I prefer to construct of concrete, or analogous material, the walls of the body being of any suitable thickness. I have shown herewith the body chiefly constructed of circular form in cross section, the same having a flat upright face resting against the inside of a fence,
for example, a fence being indicated at b.,
The interior of the receptacle is constructed to communicate with a sewer, as through a sewer pi e 0 provided with a trap d, a strainer e being ocated over the trap. By this construction it will be evident all liquids will be drained into the sewer.
The body of the receptacle is provided with t a cover indicated at which may. lie hinged as shown at g to a fine plate It secured upon the fence or otherwise, as may be desired. This cover I arrange to 'be opened by means of a foot lever '5 connected to the cover by a rod 7',
the arrangement beingsuch that the cover a may be raised to a limited extent suflicient for the reception of garbage into the receptacle, but not suficien't for or others to find l'ad access to the garbage awless children or in the receptacle, the ei ht of the receptacle 1 being also preferablysu cient to aid in preventing lawless access thereinto. The extent to which the cover shall be lifted by the foot lever ma readily be governed by the oint of attac ment of the rod 7' to the foot ever, and the point of attachment of the rod to the cover.
The body'ot' the receptacle is rovided with a discharge door indicated at is coated at the lower on thereof, the fence being cut away also to lprovide for the door. When the receptac e is made of concrete, a plate Z will be inserted over the door to support the cement while drying. The door and door 4 frame m are constructed of suitable metal, as of malleable iron, for example, the door being hinged to one of the uprights of the door frame or otherwise, as indicated at n. The opposite end of the door is provided with any sultable locking device, as for example, a hasp p engaged over a stapleq, in which a padlock'ma' be engaged. The collector of garbage wi be provided with a key to the door. The cover is made to fit snugly over the upper end of the'bodyof the receptacle, and 1s arranged to close. automatically as soon as the footlever is released.
It will be apparent that the body of the re ceptacle mig t be made of any suitable material, as fol-example; of sheet metal, where the-receptacle is desired to be made of small ed will be free from the commonannoyances communicating with said chamber provided size, adapted simply to the use of a single family.
The foregoing description will make it ohvious that a garbage receptacle so constructand objectionable features common in the employment of the various garbage receptacles in ordinary use.
It will be apparent that the cover will be self closing When the foot lever mechanism is released by gravity.
What I claim as my invention'is:
A garbage receptacle comprising a body formed of concrete or' analogous material forming an interior chamber, a drain pipe with a trap and strainer, a fixed plate secured upon the upper edge of the body on one side 1 thereof a self closing cover hinged to said plate to close down snugl upon the remainmg upper edge of the ho .y, oot lever mechanism to partially open the cover, a door frame located on one side of the body at the lower end thereof, and a discharge door hinged to said frame, the height of the body L" and the partial opening of the cover being ar ranged to prevent access to the garbage in (tihe receptacle except through the discharge oor.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HARRY L. SCHELLENBERG.
