Description
`UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN Pierson, oF ELATBUSH, New YORK.
sTENcH-.TRAP- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,139, dated March 20, 1883.
' Application tiled July 3,1882. (No model.) l
To all whom it may concern:
'ing an elb'ow at its lower end, and a gate having hinged to it a strip or plate, also hinged to the pipe at apoint above the elbow.
lt consists, further, in 'the employment, in connection with the box or vessel,ot' the in letpipe provided with an elbow having a gate hung by a double-jointed hinge, substantially as hereinafter 'more 4fully set forth.
Referent-e is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference .indicate corresponding partsin all the figures.
Figure l isalongitudinalsectional elevation of' the trap. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal elevation ot' the same.
The cylindrical box A is provided on its bottom with a downwardly-projecting screw-collar, B, which is screwed in the upper end of the lower section of the waste-pipe, (shown in dotted lines.) Apiece of pipe,U, projects upward from the cover D, which is screwed in the vessel or box," and the upper end of this tube is held by means ot' a loose screw-collar, E, of
' the usual construction, to the lower end ofthe upper section of the soil-pipe. The pipe C is extended down into the vessel br box A, and at its lower end a bend or elbow, F, is formed, which is slightlyinclined downward. As the box or vessel A would have to have a considerable diameter if the pipe C were to pass` through the middle of the cover D, Ihave arranged it at one side, or eccentrically, as shown in Fig. l, so that the elbow can be larger than the radius ofthe box. A gate, G, is hinged to a strip, H, which is hinged to lugs J, projecting from the pipe C above the elbow; or, if desired, the upper end ot' vthe gate can be hinged directly to the upperedge of' the bottom opening of the elbow. The gate Gr closes the lower opening of the elbow automatically by the action oi its own weight, and is raised or opened by the water as it passes from the lower opening of the elbow. Thegate will open andclose more readily, and will h't closer on the endof the elbow, if a double hinge, as shown, is used. The gate closes the lower end of the elbow so well that no` gases can pass upward into the pipe C. The cover D can easily be removed it' the vessel or box A is to be cleaned, &c.
The vessel A is preferably made of glass, porcelain, or like material, so that it will not be acted upon by moisture or gases.
Having thus fully described` my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 4 l. In a stench-trap, the combination, with the box or vessel A, of the inlet-pipe C, provided with an elbow, F, atitslowerend. tue gate 7o Gr, and the strip or plate H, hinged to the same and to the pipe G at a point above the elbow, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a stench-trap, the combination, with the box or vessel A, ot' the inlet-pipe C and the gate G, hinged by a double-jointed hinge, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
, HERMAN P'IETSCH.
