PATENT- OFFICE.
, GEORGE A. REICH, OE sAIv FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
` SEWER-TRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent-N0. 278,045, dated May 22, 188e.
Application led February 7, 1883. (No model.)-
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. REICH, of San Francisco,in the countyof San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Sewer-Traps, of which the following Vis a specication.
This invention has reference to an improved sewer-trap of that class which is interposed between the house-main and the sewer; and the'invention consists of a sewer-trap formed .of a U-shaped pipe having acentral upright casing. Within theuprightcasingisarranged a removable receptacle with an inclined perforated bottom for oakum saturated with" carbolic acid. The receptacle is guided by dialnetricalilanges in the grooves of the cylindrical case, and provided at the lower end with hinged valves that t on seats of the U- shaped pipe.
VIn the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved sewer-trap. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the trap on line Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section ot' the same, showing the interior receptacle.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts.
Ain the drawings represents a U-sliaped' pipe, which connects at one side with the main pipe that leads from the house, and at the other side with the pipe leading to the sewer. The U-shapedpipe Ais provided with av central upright casing, B, of cylindrical shape, within which is arranged a receptacle, G, preferably of cylindrical shape, with attened sides, as shown in Fig. 2, that is open at the top and provided with a conical perforated bottom, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The receptacle C is guided by dan ges a a, arranged at diametricallyopposite points in interior grooves, a', of the casing B.
To the lower part of the receptacle G, below A the flanges a a, are hinged two valves, D D',
the former of which is litted on 'an interior seat, d, of that part of the pipe A communicating with the house-pipe, while the valve D lits on au interior seat, d', ot' that part of the pipe A connected to the sewer-main.
For the purpose of placing the receptacle C and the valves D Dl into their proper positions, the casing B is provided with interior guide-shoulders' and grooves, d2, at that side where the valve D is arranged, said guides slanting over at their lower ends toward the seat d', so that the valve D can passA along 55 thelatter into position without obstruction. The valve D assumes at the same time its position on the seat d. Both valves turn on their hinges in the direction' toward theA sewer, as indicated by arrows in Fig. l, both being re- 6o tained in position on their seats by the pressure of the liquid in the trap. At the .lower end of the casing B are arranged inwardlyprojecting shoulders e c, on which the dan ges a a of the receptacle C are supported. A cen- `ter rod, f, which is connected to the bottom of the receptacle C, passes through a central opening of the lid B of the case B, and serves to screw the lid tightly in position by anut, f. The receptacle C isv filled with oakuni 7o charged with carbolic acid, `which neutralizes the sewer-gases and other`vapors emitted by the water in the trap. Vheneverancw charge of carbolic acid has to be given, or a-new supply of Oakum, the lid is removed, while about once a month, or oftener, the receptacle is entircly removed and the trap flushed with water and thoroughly cleaned of all sediments.
By myimproved sewer-trap the sewage from the house will readily pass to the main sewer, 8C as the valves will Open and close in accordance with the pressure ot the liquid thereon. When the sewage is discharged they are closed by the body of the liquid remaining in the U- shaped body ot' the trap, soas to forni there, 85 by a double seal that prevents the passage ot' sewer-gases into the house.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent- 1. A sewer-trap consisting ot' a U-shaped 9o main pipe, A, a central cylindrical casing, B, and au interior removable receptacle, C, having valves D D', hinged to the lower part thereof, and fitted on interior seats, d d, of the main pipe A, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a U-shaped main pipe, A, a central upright casing, B, an interior removable receptacle, C, that is guided in the casing, and provided with a perforated bottom, and hinged valves D D', that open in Ico the same direction toward the sewer, and are. rior seats, d d', of the main pipe A, substantitted to interior seats of the main pipe A,subtielly as set forth. stantially as specied. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my 3. The combination of the U-shaped main invention l have signed my Ila-me in presence 5 pipe A, having an upright cylindrical casing, of two subscribing Witnesses.
B the latter being provided with interior w giiidegrooves, a', and guide-shoulders d2, with GEO' A' REICH a detaehable receptacle, @having anges a a, VitUeSSeS:
a perforated bottom, and valves D D', hinged JOHN E. HAMILL,
1o below the anges and adapted to fit the inte- F. A. DOCKWEILER.
