CORPORATION OF'ILLINOIS.

Application led .Tnly 14,
To all lwhom t may concern.'
Be it known that 1,. ROBERT BLANK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Columbus in the county of Franklin and State of hio, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Fireproof Wastecans, of w ich the foll'owlng is a specification.
My present invention relates generally to receptacles and more particularly to a metallic fireproof waste can, capable of manufacture in. a variety of sizes for various uses, my object being the provision of a fire-proof receptacle of that nature adapted as a garbage or waste can for house, factor street, park and other uses.
generally speaking my invention cons1sts of a can which embodies a readily opening door together with means whereby this door is normally held in closed position so as to prevent communication of fire either to the contents of the can or from the contents to the exterior of the can.
The present form which my invention takes is shown in the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a side view,
Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical section taken therethrough,
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the cover removed,
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing one of the doors in open position, and
Figure 5 is a detail sectional side view illustrating a slightly modified form of door controlling lever. l
Referring now to these figures my invention proposes a can including an upright cylindrical body 10,. the shape of which lends itself to ready convenient and cheap -manufacture, having an upper open end and an inturned annular reinforcing lip 11 around said upperf end, the body being preferably of one diameter throughout.
The base or bottom plate 12 as shown particularly in Figure 2, may be either flat -or of the concavo-convex form illustrated, and
is preferably provided with a anged edge' 13 adapted to telescope the lower end of the body 10 and receive therein a reinforcing ring 14 of heavier material, whose lower edge 15 depends slightly below the coin- 1921.' serial no. 484,72@
ciding lower edges of the body 10 and the base flange 13.
The cover 16 is preferably of substantlally'the semi-globular form shown with its lo wer enlarged open end rovided with an o'set annular flange 17 av apted to telescope the reinforced upper edge of the can body, flange 17 of the cover referably termmating in a rolled rib 18 or strengthening purposes.. At its upper central portion, the cover 16 has an upward projecting pressed lntegral cap 19 which includes an annular wall 20 forming .a support for brackets 21 to which the upper ends of the upper inner sections 22 of door controlling levers are hinged at 23,
At opposite points, the cover has door opemngs 24 whose lower and side edges are preferably reinforced by inturned lips 25, and into these openings doors 26, curved to conform to the curvature of the cover, are yieldlngly held in seated relation at all times. These doors 26 are connected by hinges 27 disposed at their upper edges and secured to the upper inner portion of the cover, the lower edges of the door havin lnward curved lips 28' which engage the a The doors 26 are also provided on their inner surfaces and adjacent to their lower edges with brackets 29 to which the lower outer ends of the lower sections 30 of door coltlrolling levers are pivotally connected at The lower ends of the upper lever seo'- tlons' 22 and the upper ends of the lower lever sections 30 are pivotally connected at 32, and these ivoted ends of the lever sections are pre erably enlarged as shown to form weights 33 which, through gravity, serve to hold the doors 26 in the closed position shown in Fi re 2, in such manner that either or both o the doors may be pressed inward to the open position shown 1n Figure 4 in order to permit ingress to the can body.
In order to improve the lateral rigidity of the door actuating lever mechanism by lengthening the hinge axes, each lower section 30 pre erably 'includes two spaced arms connected by a web, and the upper section" is used in duplicate, there being two sections 22 for each door. This is most clearly shown inA Figures 3 and 4. Figure 4 also jacent reinforced edges of the door openings.
shows how the two lever mechanisms are staggered relatively to each other so that when either` door is, or both doors are, opened the lever mechanisms clear each other by st-raddling. This last feature permits the use of larger doors and greater opening movementof the doors than could otherwise be had.
As shown in Figure 5 each door controlling lever may include an upper section 34 pivoted ,to the cover and provided with a weight 35 adjacent to its lower end. rThis lower end is hinged at 36 to the upper end of the lower section 37 pivotally connected to the door it controls, so that one only of the sections carries the weight instead of the sections cooperatingI to form the weight as previously described,
The can or receptacle as a whole may be transported from place to place by virtue ot' the provision of handles 38 at diametrically opposite sides of the body 10 adjacent to its upper open end, or a bail as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1 may be utilized in hinged relation 'to the can body for the same purpose.
ln any event it is obvious that under normal circumstances the can or receptacle will be maintained in completely closed condition with the cover in place, by virtue of the automatically closing doors, and it is likewise obvious that under normal circumstances the means utilized for maintaining the doors closed will be housed and protected from eX ternal inuences and in this way maintained in properly andv eectively operating condition at all times.
l claim:
1. The combination of a container having a side opening; an inward opening door piv- Maanen oted to the container, and when closed seating against the margin of said opening; and gravitating levers mounted within the container, pivoted to each other and one pivoted to said door and the other to a part of said container, said levers being constructed and arranged to hold said door yieldingly closed by the action of gravity.
2. A waste can comprising in combination a body open at its upper end; a cover resting upon and projecting above said body, and formed with a side opening; a door hinged at its upper edge to said cover and when closed seating outward4 against the margin of said opening; and gravitating levers pivoted to each other and pivoted one to the door and the other lto the upper central portion of said cover, said levers being constructed and arranged to hold said door closed by the action of gravity. i
3. A. Waste can comprising in combination a body open at its upper endl; a cover resting upon and projecting above said body and formed with opposed side openings; inward opening doors hinged at their upper edges to said cover and serving to close respective openings; and two sets of gravitating levers, one for each door, said sets being oHset to straddle each other in their movements with the doors and each set including two levers one pivoted to the door and to the second lever and the second pivoted also to the cover, said sets of levers being' arranged to swing in substantially vertical planes and to urge the corresponding doors closed by the action of gravity.'
ln testimony whereof l have ali-ined my signature.
