Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Hot. 1, 1918.
Application filed [lctober 13, 1917. Serial No. 196,496. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENon J. DENNIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monsey, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trap-Nests, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends the provision of a trap nest for hens, and aims to provide a nest of this character with a novel construction of door, which can be easily opened by the hen seeking entrance to the trap, the door gravitating to its normal closed position when the hen has passed throughthe door opening into the nest.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detail description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawing forming part of this specification like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of the trap showing the door closed.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view partly in section showing the position of the door sections when the door is opened by the hen entering the trap.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the manner of holding the door in a folded position when its use is not desired.
A nest constructed in accordance with my invention essentially embodies a nest box or body indicated generally at A, andwhich includesa bottom 10, top 11, side walls 12, and front and rear walls 13 and 14s respectively. The front wall .13 is provided with a doorway as shown, and which doorway is normally obstructed by the door B constructed in accordance with the invention.
The door B is made up of a plurality of metal sections 14', and each section has its longitudinal edge rolled as at 15 for the reception of a rod 16. The sectlons are arranged edge to edge, and the rolled portions 15 of the adjacent edges of the respective sections are cut away as at 17 to accommodate a ring 18 which encircles the adjacent rods 16, whereby the sections are hingedly connected together for the purpose to be presently described. Depending from the top 11 are spaced hook-like elements 20 from which the door as a unit is suspended, the hook-like terminals engaging the adjacent rod 16 of the uppermost section of the door. The door is pivotally mounted at this point, while the construction and arrangement of parts is such that the door as a unit may be separated from the hook-like elements of one trap, to permit of the use of the door in connection with another trap if so desired. The door is arranged at the inner side of the front wall, and of a width slightly greater than the width of the door opening to prevent outward swinging movement of the door, while the lowermost section of the door terminates short of the lower edge of the doorway, thus providing positions, and also preventing inward swinging movement of the door.
A pin 24 is slidably mounted in a perforation 25 provided therein and the said pin may engage under the intermediate and lower sections 14: as best shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings whereby the said intermediate and lower sections 14 are held at elevated positions. When the hen enters the body her back will engage the lower edge of the lower sections 14 and swing the same so that the intermediate sections 1 1 will swing down beyond the inner end of the pin and consequently the sections 14 will move to the position shown in Fig. 1 and the hen is trapped in the nest.
What is claimed is A trap nest comprising a body having a door opening, cleats located in the body at the sides of the opening and having inclined surfaces, sections hingedly connected. together, the upper section being pivotally connected with the body at the top of the door opening, and a pin movably mounted on the body and engageable under the intermediete section to hold the intermediate and lower sections in elevated positions at the door opening, the lower section being of greater transverse breadth than the intermediate section whereby the lower section will extend below the pin when the inter1nediztte section is resting thereon.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
CLARENCE J. DENNIS.
