'Y Specification of Letters Paton-t.
.ftp m e Med-November 4,1907. 'Serial Nod'lim:
.Patented Nev. 17, 1908.
T-wl' whom ft-may Beit e.known that we, SAMUEL L. EAST- BURN and Renner C. REEVES, Jr., citizens of.
the United States, and residents of Sloatsbur in the-county of Rockland and State of ew-Yoak, have made and invented cer- 'tainnew anduseful Im rovements 'in Closet- .Seats, of which the fo v owing is a 'specificavice ysecured by said hinges in the place.
thereof. The further object of our invention is to so construct 'the device that it may 'be neatly and Acompaetly folded, whereby 'to conveniently carry the same when traveling, which shali he neat in appearance, cheap to manufacture and so constructed and arranged as tQ"obviate all danger of a child 'from accidentally falling therefrom.
With these and 'her ends in view, our invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as. will be hereinafter fully described and point- 1 as shown in Fig. 1. drawings ure 1` is aperspective view ol our im roved vice,
'ed out in the claims. n 'the accompanyin the supplemental seat vbeing m its lowered position. 2 is a lon itud-inal sectional view ofthe device in its cosedposition, Fig, '3 isa sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detached sectional view of a modication.
.Referring to thedrawin'gs, 4 indicates a howl 'of any suitable construction, Ito which the. usual or main seat '5 is hinged in any suitable manner, said seat. being provided on its im'der side with 'the usual rubber lug '6,
aida' ted to rest 'u onthe upper edge of bow g Supporte' upon the closet, prefer-l ably by suitable hinges 8, is our improved device, which comprises a supplemental seat '9,ad'a ted to be superimpose paratively small opening 10, said seat being multaneously to e and i' upon themain seat and whidh is rovided with a com' provided on as under side wie. lugs 1 1, of
*UNITED sTATEs'PATENT Ormea rubber, or other suitable material, whereby Y any marring or scratching of the upper surface of the seat 5 is prevented, when the device is in its lowered position. At its rear side, the sup lemental seat is provided with a thiclrened, atera'lly extending portion 12, having its upper, outer edge beveled as indicated at 13. This thickened portion may be formed integral with the lsupplemental Seat, or it may be made separate and securely fastened thereto in 'any suitable manner.
Hinged to the outer edge of the portion i2, by suitable hinges 15, is the cover or lid 14, the under side of which is provided with a recess 17, extending throughout practically the entire area' of the cover, as shown in Fi 1,`forvthe purpose hereinafter described. The upper surface of the cover is preferably dush with the up "ersurface o'f the portion 12, and its rear e e is beveled, as indicated at 16, said bevele edge'co-act'- ingwith and abutting against the beveledv edge 1'3, when .the cover is raised in the osition shown in Fi 1. At its front e ge the cover is provide with a spring catch 18 'of any suitableA construction, which isada ted to normally lock the cover to the supp emental seat, whereby 'the may be raised siose t e usual seat 5, as indicated by dotted' ines in Fig. 2, but which may be pressed 'or operated to unlock the parts when it is desired to raise only 'the cover, and expose the supplemental seat 9,
Hinged, or otherwise' movably secured to the upper surface of `the supplemental seat 9, and adjacent the sides thereof, are the arms or sides 19, shaped to conform with the recess 17 in the cover 14, which are normally `folded' or 'turned inward, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, in which position they are .entirely inclosed in said recess, but which are rotated or turned upward when the' sup lemental seat is to be used, as shown in ig. 1,' in which position their inner edges w1ll abut against the inner wall of the recess 17, the arms being retained in 'this position by means of suitable clips 20, theclps shown being pivoted at their inner ends, whereby they may be 'evolved intol operative or inoperative position as desired. By thus arranging ,the parts, the lid'l and arms or sides 1:9vare held or'supported .in their upright or opened positions and thereby. assist' in preventin the child from accidentally falling from t e seat.
To strengthen and assist in supporting the sides or arms 19 in place, and in order to completely inclose the child and prevent it from accidentally falling from or climbing out of the device, we detachably secure to the sides`19 in any desirable wayhor manner, a suitable table or tray 22, that in the drawings ,being shown as fitted in the slots or openingsr2l, formed in the :forwardends of the arms or sides 19, and there ,detachably held by the bolts or catches 23. u
While we prefer .to formthe device of wood, it will or course be understood that it may be made of other material, as, forinstance, the several parts may be shaped or stamped up from metal or may be made from hard rubber, papier-mch, etc.
` As'shown in Fig. 4, the flan e 24 formed on the lid 14 may be made suciently large in order to inclose and conceal not only the arms or sides 19, but also the peripheral edge of the supplemental seat 9, s o that when the device is Afolded and lowered on to the main seat, it will have every appearance and semblanceI of the usual lid.
, From the foregoing it will be seen that raised or lowered as in the case of the ordinary lid; that when traveling it may be easily and readily detached from the closet seat, and as it folds in a Hat, compact form, it may be conveniently carried in a valise or suit case.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
