SAMUEL ASO'I-I, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LOCKING DEVICE FOR AWNING CORIDS OR STRAPS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented-'Oct.-'19, 1909.
Application filed April 14, 1909. Serial No. 489,781.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL ASCII, a subect of the Czar of Russia, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Locking Device for Awning Cords or Straps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The proprietors of shops, and other persons who may have awnings which are accessible to mischievous children, are annoyed frequently by having the awning cordls loosened or tampered with during the nlg t.
The object of this invention is to provide simple means for inclosing and locking up the lower portion of the awning cord or strap at the point where it is attached. By means of a key access may be had to the interior so as to adjust the awning when desired.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective indicating how the device is used in practice; Fig. 2 is a vertical central section through the device and indicating in dotted lines the cover of the case in its open position; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken through the look at the side of the device and by means of which it is held closed.
Referring more particularly to the parts, 1 represents the base plate of the device which is adapted to be attached to a wall 2, or similar support, by means of screws 3, or similar fastening devices. At the lower edge of the plate 1, a cover 4 is attached by hinges 5, or similar means. This cover is of pyramidal form, presenting a face plate 6 of reduced dimensions, and provided with a blank keyhole 7 which is adapted to attract attention away from a lock 8 disposed on the side wall of the case, and provided with a suitable keyhole 9. At this keyhole a suitable key 10 can be inserted, which will operate a bolt 11 cooperating with a keeper 12,
On the inner face of the base plate 1, there is provided a cleat 13, about which the lower end of the awning cord 14 is attached in a well understood manner. The upper wall 15 of the cover is provided with an enlarged opening 16 at its inner edge which cuts through the edge so as to form a slot or mouth 17. After the awning has been adjusted to the proper height, the lower end of the cord is wrapped upon the cleat, as indicated, and the cover is then looked in position so that the cord passes upwardly from the cleat through the opening 16. By applying the key at the keyhole 9, the cover can be let down, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, so as to enable the coil of cord on the cleat to be reached. The cleat 13 may be very conveniently cast in one piece with the base plate.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. In a device of the class described, in combination, a cleat adapted to be attached to a support and adapted to have an awning cord attached thereto, a cover movably supported and having an opening at the edge thereof-permitting the awning cord to pass from the interior, and a lock requiring a key to 0 en the same and affording means for holding said cover closed to prevent access to be had to said cleat when the awning cord is attached thereto.
2. In a device of the class described, in
combination, a cleat adapted to be attached to a support and adapted to have an awning cord attached thereto, a cover movably supported and having an opening at the edge thereof through which said cord may pass to the interior, and a lock which may be opened only by means of a key and holding said cover closed.
3. In a device of the class described, in combination, a base plate adapted to be attached to a support, a cover attache-d thereto and adapted to swing open, and a lock operating only by means of a key for locking said cover, said base plate having a cleat to which an awning cord may be secured, said cover having an opening in the edge thereof through which said cord may pass to the interior.
4;. In a device of the class described, in combination, a base plate having a cover hinged thereto near the lower edge thereof, a key-operated lock in connection with said cover for holding the same closed, and a cleat on said base plate to which an awning cord may be attached, said cover having an opening in the upper edge through which the awning cord may pass to the interior.
5. A device of the class described, having a base plate adapted to be attached to a support, a cover hinged to said base plate having a blank keyhole in-the forward face thereof, and a lock disposed on the side of said cover in an inconspicuous position af-' fording means for holding said cover closed, said cover having an opening in the upper edge thereof through which an awning cord may pass to the interior.
6. In a device of the class described, in combination, a cleat adapted to be attached to a support, a cover movably supported and having an opening, means for locking said cover in its closed position, and a cord passing through said opening and attached to said cleat, said opening being of reduced dimensions and rendering said cleat inaccessible from the interior.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
