WILLIAM H. PALMER. 0F YALE. MICHIGAN.
GARMENT-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 17, 1914.
Application filed October 27, 1913. Serial No. 797,367.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM H. PALMER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Yale, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a garment fastenor whereby a garment may be drawn closely together after the fastener is partially secured.
It is particularly adaptable for use with corsets or the like as it is effective in drawing the front steels together, after it has been hooked so as to connect them.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a corset provided with a fastener that embodies features of the invention; Fig. 2 is a view in detail of the fastener permitting adjustment of tension and providing a posi tive lock, shown in hooked and open position; and Fig. 3 is a View of this latter modification closed and locked.
Referring to the drawings a corset 1 has the usual front steels or stays 2 and may be provided with an abdominal band having the usual mating members 3. The stays may be hooked together at the top with the usual clasp a or other device that prevents endwise movement of the stays relative to each other.
A plate 11 that may be rectangular in form and is preferably of such dimensions as to overlie both of the stays 2, is pivoted to one of the stays by a stud 12 on the stay that extends through the plate near one corner thereof. A diagonal slot 13 extends across the plate with an enlargement 8 at the lower end thereof whereby when the plate is swung into position shown in Fig. 2, the head of a stud is on the other stay opposite the stud 19. may be readily entered in the slot. By swinging the plate on the stud 6 the companion stud moves up the slot and draws the stays together, the parts assuming the position shown in Fig. 3. A plurality of these plates are secured at intervals on the stays 2 and one is provided for the members 3 of the abdominal band. The slot 13 is sinuous throughout its length and obliquely disposed with the inner end thereof at the same end of said plate as said Copies of this patent stud and transversely alining therewith, while the outer end of the slot is enlarged and in longitudinal alinement with the stud. A latch 15 is pivotally supported by the stud 12 to swing in front of the plate 11 and engage the stud let to lock said stud in any one of the angles or corners of the slot. The latch has the edge thereof slotted to receive the headed stud and the slots of said latch are so disposed that the stud let can be locked in any adjusted position'.
In operation the parts are so disposed that when the plate is swung into substantially parallel relation with the stays, the strain on the studs tends to hold the plate in that position. It is especially effective for use in drawing together the members of the abdominal band. One advantage of the construction is the fact that it may be hooked over the studs while the stays are separated and then may be swung into place and in so doing draw the stays or band together. Similarly to remove the garment, the fastener may be swung into open position which allows the garment to separate after which, as the strain is off, it may be unhooked. The modifications permit the variation in drawing up the stays to a greater or less extent.
\Vhat I claim is A garment fastener comprising a pivot stud adapted to be secured to an edge of a garment, a rectangular plate having an end thereof pivotally mounted on said stud, said plate having an obliquely disposed sinuous slot formed therein with the inner end thereof at the same end of said plate as said stud and transversely alining therewith and the outer end thereof enlarged and in longitudinal alinement with said stud, a headed stud adapted to be secured to another edge of the garment to engage in the slot of said plate when said plate is horizontally disposed, whereby as said plate is shifted to a vertical position, said stud rises in said slot and engages in a wall thereof, and a latch pivoted upon the pivot stud against said plate, said latch having an edge thereof slotted to receive said headed stud and hold said plate in an adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
