UNITED STATES PATENT. Or'ruon,
TIMOTHY L. BOSART, JR., OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 111,171, dated January 24, 1871.
I, TIMOTHY L. BOSART,J1'., of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a certain Goal-Box, of which the following is a specification:
N atnrc and Objects of the Invention.
My invention relates to a receptacle for bolding a supply of coal for halls, rooms, oflices, &c.; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of a case adapted to that purpose, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
Description of the Accompanying Drawing.
Figure 1 is a front view of a coal-box embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is ayertieal transverse section of the same.
General Description.
A is the exterior of the case or box, which may be made of any suitable material, plain or ornamental, as desired; B, hinged top or lid, and 0 door or doors in the front.
In addition to providing a neat or ornamental receptacle for coal, a further and important object is to afford a more convenient means of handling or shoveling it out of the box into the stove than heretofore. This I accomplish by arranging the inclined adjustable chute or cant-board D, extending from side to side of the box, in such position as to direct the coal H, as it passes down from the reservoir A into the lower chamber, G, toward the back of the box, so as to leave'the front part of the floor-board I naked, so that a shovel may be more conveniently inserted under the coal.
The upper end of the chute or cant-board D is hinged to a board, F, extending the width of the box, and arranged to slide vertically in grooves f, and the lower end to a bar, E, that extends the width ofthe box and rests on the slides or cleats K. The chute is by this means made adjustable, so that the opening at the bottom, through which the coal passes from reservoir A into the chamber G, may be made larger or smaller, to adapt it to various sizes of coal.
It will also be seen that by this arrangement for making the chute adjustable the lower part may be drawn forward, so that it will stand perpendicular with the front, and thus the box may be converted into a receptacle for holding wood.
The difficulty experienced in shoveling coal out of a box made with an inclined bottom is well known, besideswhich it is unsightly in appearance, while abox constructed and arranged as here shown may be both neat in appearance and aflord the greatest convenience for handling the coal.
The box may be of any size adapted to rooms or halls, and when placed inthe corridors of tenement buildings may be large enough to hold one or more cart-loads, and furnished with locks for safety.
Claim.
I claim as my invention- A coal-box having the reservoir A and the lower chamber, G, separated by the adjustable inclined chute D, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for'the purpose set forth.
