Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Au 1111, 1191a.
Application filed August 2, 1913. Serial No. 782,648. 1
To all avhom it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDRE M. GREAN,
' a citizen of the United States, residing at parel are cut or slashed from the bottom upwardly a considerable distance, and said skirts being narrow, as a consequence, it fol-- lows that the lower parts of the legs of the wearer are exposed when walking or mount ing steps and the like.
The present invention "aims to provide novel IIlGZlIlS'Df asimple character, which may be applied directly to the portion of the leg that is thus exposed bythe skirt, and
will hide the same from gaze.
An embodiment of the invention is'illustrated in the accompanying drawings, but it .viewed from the inner side.
will be obvious that various modifications may be made from the same without departing from the scope of the invent-ion.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, showing the article applied. Fig. 2 is an elevation of ,a portion of the article Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. '4 is a horizontal sectional view. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing a form of fringe made up of a large number of strands or threads.
Similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all, the figures of the drawings.
In the particular embodiment illustrated, a leg-encircling garter formed of an elastic strap 5, is employed, having a socket clasp element 6 at one end and a coacting head element at the other that is arranged to detachably interlock with the socket element.
one face of the same, preferably by sewing, is an ornamental body 8 that is extensible,
.fi-t ermit the necessary elongation-and contraction of the strap 5.
Secured to the opposite face of the said strap 5, preferably by stitching, is leg-covering means that may be to and depending loosel in the form of fringe 9 that thus carried by the strap, and depends below the same and below the said body 8..
In use", the garter is placed about the leg above the calf, being secured by the interlocking engagement of the clasp elements 6 and 7. The fringe or leg-covering means 9 is of sufficient length to extend substantially to the ankle, and thus covers or hides the leg, Without in any manner interfering with its movements, and being also independent of the skirt. i
' While the device is particularly intended for use in connection with a narrow skirt having a longitudinal slit or slash at its lower portion, it may of course be employed with short skirts, or in fact with any type of skirt. For example, it would hide the lower part ofthe leg when-a skirt is lifted.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many. advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the shape, size, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
, Having thus fully described my invention,
1. As an article of manufacture, a legcovering device comprising a leg-encircling garter and leg-covering means secured theretherefrom to encircle the leg and concea the shape thereof.
2. As an article of manufacture, alegcovering device .comprising a garter arranged to encircle the leg above the calf thereof, and leg-covering means loosely suspended from the garter and of suiii'cient length to extend substantially to and terminate at the ankle of the wearer, said means Carried by the elastiostrap and secured to loosely surrounding the leg and concealing the shape thereof.
3. As an article of manufacture, a legencircling garter consisting of an elastic strap having detach'ably interlocking head and socket clasps at its ends, an extensible body arranged over and l ngitudinally of 'the elastic strap, and leg-hiding fringe semy hand in presence of two subscribing witcured to the elastic strap in rear of the body nesses.
and depending below the same and below the strap, said fringe being of sufficient length ALEXANDRE GREAN' to extend substantially to and terminate at Witnesses:
the ankle and hiding the shape of the leg. JULIA A. FLYNN,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set VIOLA MORIARTY.
