OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
, DISP LnY-CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 21, 1914.
Application filed July 31, 1918. Serial No. 732,297. v
make and use the same.
This invention relates to display cases and more particularly to stationery boxes.
It has for an object to provide a display case in' which the envelops or similar articles being displayed assume aposition flush with the top of the side walls of the box when the lid is raised fordisplay purposes and one in which the said envelops or similar articles assume a lower position in the box when the lid is lowered to make room for the writing paper carried by the lid.
A furtherobject of this invention is an improved means for regulating the slide of a false bottom within the container.
Further objects will be apparent from the following specification, appended claims and drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a display case in open position, Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-sectional view therethrough with the lid raised as shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 is a similar view with the lid lowered.
In stationery boxes and the like it is desired that while said boxes are being used for display purposes, the envelops contained therein should be raised to present the appearance of a full box while at the same time the sides of such a container are necessary when the lid is closed to protect the contents of said container. It is also necessary that when the container is being transformed from one position to the other, that no damage is caused to the contents of said container. My invention sets forth a means for accomplishing these results and refer .ence to the drawings thereof shows how this is accomplished.
Referring to the drawings there is shown a container comprisin a bottom 10 to which a cover 11 is hingedly secured as at 12. This cover has the end walls thereof cut diagonally as shown and within said cover is a pocket 13 to receive writing paper shown at 14. Secured to the bottom member 10 are the end walls 15 and the front wal 16 which serve to retain the envelops in'their relative position and also to protect the contents of the container when closed. Within the container is a false bottom 17 which is formed asof a piece of cardboard or similar substance scored and bent to form the bottom member 18 which is secured to the upper face of the bottom of the container and the ends 19 which permit the false bottom 17 to have a swinging relation with the portion 18. In order that the desired swinging motion may be imparted to the false bottom 17 when the lid of the container is moved, a tape 20 has one end thereof secured to one of the edges 19 from where it passes across the false bottom 17 and has the opposite end thereof secured as at 21 in the cover as shown. It is apparent that as the lid 11 is raised or lowered, the tension on the tape 20 is varied and by the variations of the tension on the tape 20 the false bottom 17 is raised or lowered as the case may be.
In packing the container envelops shown as at 22 are placed upon the false bottom 17 so that by movement of the false bottom 17 the envelops assume either of the positions shown in Figs. 2 or 3 as the case may be but to prevent the envelops from having a swinging motion such as one fixed or resting on the false bottom 17, a partition 23 is disposed across the openside of the container to limit the rearward movement of the evelops, this partition is recessed as at 24 to enable the tape 20 to pass therethrough with freedom.
Various modifications may be made withon said cover remote from the hinged connection thereof to the false bottom through said partition for causing movement of sand cover to impart movement to said false bottom to vary the elevation thereof. 2. In a display box, a box member comprising a bottom with side walls thereabout, a cover hingedly secured to said bottom member, a partition across the rear of said box member, said partition beingof less height than the side walls, a vertically movable false bottomin said box member, said false bottom comprising a piece of material formed into a parallelogram, one of the wide side walls thereof being ermanently secured to the bottom ofsald box member, the
opposite side of, said parallelogram serving as a bottom to receive contents for said box,-
the short sides of said parallelogram permitting oscillation of'said false bottom and a tab secured to said parallelogram and to a point on said hinged cover remote from its hinge, said tab assing through the partition at the rear 0? the box member.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARRY HAM.
