Be it known that I, MANUEL SHAMPANfeR,

a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Passaic, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful D1splay- Receptacle, of which the following is a spec1- "fication, the same being a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which 1t appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to cases or receptacles for articles or materials'of any kind, and in particular to a box made or provided with a self-contained supporting device conopen receptacle in an inclined relation.

My invention consists of an article of the class described adapted to contain articles of and to retain them securely against loss, but

also to permit them to be readily withdrawn at will and to hold the same at any desired angle forexhibition or display purposes, the

whole forming a unitary organization.

Referring) particularly -.to-'the drawings, 61 denotes the ody portion or receptacle proper of the box and 21 the preferably integral cover therefor. The rear portion of the .cover in the instance under consideration is' preferably made in sectional form, as for example comprising sections 31 and 41, the upper part 21 of-the cover being preferably attached to the section 31 in a yieldable'relation as by'a hinge joint 51, integral or otherwise, and the sections 31 and 41 being also preferably secured together in a movable relation, as by a hinge joint 52. The section {11 is preferably fastened to the body portion 61 of the box ina fixed and immovable relation.

In order to'open the box, thecover 21 is first raised to avertical position, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, the same turning. on the hinge 52, after which the cover 21 is turned downward and under the said body portion 61 until the receptacle occupies the lnclined positionillustrated in Fig. 2, the duplex jointor hinge 51 and 52 yielding sufiiciently for the successful operation of the said movement. The contents of the box may thus be displayed without requiring any further manipulation, and when it is desired to close the receptacle again, as for purposes of storage or transportation, all that is necessary to be done is to restore the cover 21 to its original position, whereupon the box will occupy no more room than any ordinary receptacle of the kind; The cover thus performs a double function, first to provide a closure for theboX, and second, to serve as a means for supporting the body portion of the same in an inclined relation for display purposes. I

I sometimes desire to hold the receptacle in a permanently inclined position. A convenient method of making a box to answer this purpose consists in forming up a blank, as shown n Fig. 5, by bending, or cutting and attach ng, the parts 4 and 6 on the line 10, and then bending, or cutting and attaching, the side flaps 2 in an inward direction, or toward each other on the line 11, and then securing the said flaps to the lower portions 3 of the side portions 5 and 7, whereupon the box will assume the position shown in Fig. 6, where it rests upon the lower edge of the front face as indicated by the line 10, and also upon the lower edges of the side portions 2 and 3, and the goods to be displayed will be contained in the receptacle formed by the sides 5 and 7, the front part having an upper edge 9 and the bottom portion 4 terminating in a rear edge 8.

It is obvious that receptacles or cases comprising a unitary organization in which the parts are not separable,such as those of the kind described, may be made in other shapes than those shown, dependent upon the character of the contents desired to be held or displayed by the same, and upon the particular use to Which the box is intended to be put, as for example whether the latter is designed to contain material in bulk or packages. It will be noted that my device provides a closure comprising a rigid cover to overlie the entire top and upper portions of the sides of the receptacle, whereby the contents of the box, when closed, may be maintained in a condition-free from dust. The said cover is hinged to the box at one end of the same a considerable distance from the top thereof, as shown in Fig. 1, the other hinge joint ofthe closure being located at the top edge of one end of the receptacle, and being held securely to the same by the friction of the wide depending side portions of the cover at that point against the sides of the box. On account of the rigidity of the cover, which extends without any open cracks or yieldable portions therein across the whole top of the receptacle and fits snugly thereto, the said cover will always lie close to the entire top edges of the box when in a closed relation.

The front end of the cover hangs down over the box, afl'ording thereby not only a more secure closing of the same, but also providing by the said depending portion of 'the closure, when in an inverted position,

means to hold the box' proper a distance above the support therefor, as indicated in Fig. .2, whereby the contents of the open box may be kept free from accumulated dust, etc. and may also be displayed to better advantage, and also affording space for a label description of the contents of the receptacle, or for an advertising card.

I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described herein, for

various modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.

What I claim as my invention s 1. A receptacle comprising four sides and bottom portion, a'supporting stand therefor consisting of a base having four sides and a top portion, the said four sides lying substantially in the planes of those of the receptacle, and a hinging device constructed and arranged to so attach the receptacle and base together that, when reversed in posi tion, the four side parts of the base shall overlap the four side portions of the receptacle, and the top part of the base shall form the cover of the receptacle, thus forming a closure of the entire upper portion thereof.

2. A. receptacle comprising four sides and bottom portion, a supporting stand therefor consisting of a base having four sides and top portion, the said four sides lying substantially in the planes of those of the receptacle,-one side portion of the base being less in height than its opposite one to support the receptacle at an angle, and a hinging device constructed and arranged to so attach the receptacle and base together that, when reversed in position, the four side parts of the base shall overlap the four side portions of the receptacle, and the top part of the base shall form the cover of the said receptacle, thus forming aclosure of the entire upper portion thereof having two sides of unequal height and the other two formed with inclined edges.
