RECEPTACLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 1, 1913..
Application filed June 4, 1912. Serial No. 701,504.
Be it known that I, Dnvm CUTLER, a cit-izen of the United States, and a resident of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in 'Receptacles, of which the; ollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to receptacles and particularly to such as are made of pasteboard or other sheet material.
' The object of my im rovements is to rovide a receptacle of te class specific of simple construction and adapted when 0 n, to stand firmly upon two of its corner e ges for the display of the contents of said receptacle.
My invention is illustrated, in its pre ferred form, in the drawing accompanying this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved receptacle with a portion broken away to better show its construction. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the receptacle open, in display condition. 3 is a diagrammatic cross section on line 3, 3 of 'Fig. 1.
My improved receptacle is preferably of parallelepiped form and comprises two members 4, 5, articulated along a diagonal as 6, of one side of said receptacle. Said members may be of wedge shape, or of approximately wedge' shape; edges 7, 8, of members 4, 5, respectively, being parallel with diagonal line 6 and with each other. As illustrated, edges 7, 8 overlap each other when the box 1s closed but it is obvious that they might equally well be shorter'and meet without overla ping, as do those edges contiguous to the ine of articulation 6. When edges .7, 8 overlap, as illustrated, there is thereby provided spring means for holding the receptacle in its edges are strained out of their normal planes in passing one another, see Fig. 3, when closing the box. This tension tends to hold those parts in contact when the box is closed and to prevent the box from opening without assistance. I also preferably provide said rece tacle with lips (as 9 on member 5) inwar ly reaching from those corners normal to the line of articulation, so as to properly close those corners of the receptacle. See also lip 10 to member 4.
My improved receptacle is provided with a substantial base, comprising corner edges 11, 12, by which it may be supported in its open condition, thereby fully dlsplaying its contents.
My improved receptacle therefore embodies a substantial and convenient device for storin or ship ing goods and also for their reafy and a equate display in shop windows, or elsewhere.
I claim:
A receptacle of parallelepiped form comrising two members articulated along a diagonal of-one side of said receptacle, each member being composed of two triangular parallel sides and two rectangular sides in angular relation, one of said rectangular sides being longer than the other rectangular side.
Signed at Baltimore, Md, this 25th day of May, 1912, before two subscribing witnesses.
