SZ EOZFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 704,298, dated July 8, 1902.
Application filed April 15, 1902.
To aZZ- whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, EDGAR O. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates particularly to boxes in which various commodities are packed and in which they are sometimes exhibited by the retail dealer; and it has for its object to provide improved means for sustaining the cover of a box for such purpose or other like purposes in an elevated position for the purpose of displaying the contents of the box, while at the same time such means shall not prevent the box-cover from being laid back to its full extent and shall not interfere with the snug packing of a number of such boxes in a case.
The invention will be more fully described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box to which the improvement is applied, the boxcover being represented in its closed position, while the cover-sustaining device is represented in position to receive and support the cover. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, the cover being represented in its'elevated position and resting on the sustaining device. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same, the coversustaining device being shown in full lines as folded against the body of the box and in dotted lines as extended to support the cover.
The box-body a and the cover I) may have any suitable form and may be constructed of any suitable material and in any suitable manner, the cover being usually and preferably hinged to the body. As such hinge may Serial No. 102,949. (No model.)
be of paper or cloth or of any suitable material, it is not necessary to show the same in detail, it being sufficiently indicated at c in Fig. 2. r
The cover-sustaining device is secured to the rear side of the box-body a and may consist of a strip (1 of paper-board or other suitable material, its width being substantially equal to but preferably slightly less than the height of the box-body a from the bottom to the hinge-line. The strip 01 may be secured in any convenient manner to the box-body, as by glue or otherwise, and is hinged or preferably scored slightly, as at e, f, g, and it, so that the strip shall flex on the predetermined lines. When the box is packed in a case with other boxes and when it is desired that the cover shall be turned back to its full extent, the sustaining-strip d is folded down against the box-body a, as indicated by full lines in Fig. 3; but when the box-cover is to be supported in its elevated position, as shown by full lines in Fig. 2, the sustaining or supporting strip is extended, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, thereby forming a support upon which the cover may rest and by which the cover is sustained in its elevated position.
I claim as my invention- The combination with a box-body and a cover hinged thereto, of a strip having its ends secured to the box-body and adapted to fiex on four lines, whereby said strip may be folded fiat against the body and may be extended to form a quadrangular support beneath the cover to sustain the same, substantially as described.
This specification signed and witnessed this 14th day of April, A. D. 1902.
EDGAR O. CLARK.
