STRIKE-PLATE FOR LOCKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 15, 1913.
Patented Apr. 21, v1914.
Serial No. 785,005.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN H. AMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eddington, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Strike- Plates for Locks7 of which the following is a specification. A
An object of the invention is to provide a strike plate for use in connection with doors and the casings thereof and the locks on doors for locking the doors relatively to the casing.
The invention embodies, among other features, the provision of a strike plate having adjustable means whereby the bolt and latch of a lock can be properly received in the strike plate when it is desired to secure the door relatively to the casing thereof.
The invention further embodies the provision of a simple and durable device which is arranged in the casing of a door and which includes adjustable means whereby, when the latch and bolt of a door lock are engaged with the strike plate any rattling` of the door relatively to its casing will be prevented.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the strike plate; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 3 8 in Fig. 1, showing the strike plate applied to a door casing; Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 4-4 in Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 5-5 in Fig. 2; and Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 6 6 in Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the views, I disclose a box 10 carried by a member 11 having its ends 12 projecting beyond the ends of the box, with the said box adapted to be received in a recess 13 in a door casing 14 so that the ends 12 can have suitable screws 15 passed therethrough and extend into the casing 14 to secure the box 10 in rigid position thereon, a lateral extension 16 being formed with the member 11 and projecting from one side thereof as shown, the said member being adapted to lie against the edge of the door casing and constitute the usual strike for guiding the bolt of a door into engagement with the strike plate, as will be hereinafter more fully disclosed.
The member 11 carrying the box 10 has an opening 17 which constitutes the opening for the box 10 and the said member 11 is grooved to provide a longitudinal track 18 on which is mounted to slide a plate 19 provided with a latch opening 2O and a bolt opening 21, through which the latch and bolt of the door are adapted to extend, as will be readily understood. The plate 19 inchicles a cross piece 22 which forms the openings 20 and 21 and the said cross piece is preferably provided with a slot 23 through which passes a screw 24 adapted to extend into the rear wall of the box 10 in order to secure the plate 19 in an adjusted position on the box. Now it will be readily apparent that by loosening the screw 24 the plate 19 can be adjusted vertically on the member 11 of the box in order that the latch and bolt can easily pass through the openings 20 and 21, it being thus seen that a means is provided whereby the latch and bolt will readily spring into the box when the door is closed relatively to its casing and upon which the member 11 carrying the box 10 is mounted.
A plurality of adjusting screws 25 pass loosely through a side wall 26 of the box 10 and loosely supported on the screws 25 are a series of bars 27, the said bars being provided with slots 28 in which are adapted to repose nuts 29 having threaded connection with the screws 25, the said nuts 29 being held against rotation by the configuration of the slots in which they repose. Now it will be readily apparent that after the plate 19 has been adjusted in order that the latch and bolt of the lock will readily pass through the openings 20 and 21 when the door is closed relatively to its casing, an adjustment of the bars 27 can be obtained by operating the screws 25 so that the bars will be advanced or retreated with respect to the side wall through which the screws pass, thus providing a means whereby the bars, when properly adjusted, will be engaged by the latch and bolt of the door lock when the same pass through the openings 20 and 2l so that the latch and bolt bearing against the bars 27 will prevent the door from rattling relatively to its casing, it being understood that the distance between the faces of the bars 27 and the opposite wall of the box can be increased or decreased by adjusting the b ars proportionately to the thickness or width of the latch or bolt so that the strike plate described herein can be employed to receive the latch and bolts of door locks in which the latch is of a diierent size from the above, one of the bars 27 being adapted to be engaged by the latch of the door lock and the other bar by the bolt of the door lock. The plate 19 slidable on the track 18 is adapted to lie flush with the edge of the door casing as shown, and can be readily adjusted vertically on the member l1 as mentioned heretofore, it being further apparent that when the plate is in position the screws 15, holding the member 11 in rigid engagement with the door casing, will be invisible to the eye of the observer, thus preventing children from tampering with the screws and loosening or removing the member l1 from the door casing.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
