EMORY BARNES, OF MOUNT PLEASANT, MICHIGAN.
DOOR-PROTECTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 306,806, dated October 2l, 1884.
Application filed April 2G, 1884. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMORY BARNES, of Mount Pleasant, in the county of Isabella and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Protectors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this speeieation.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the manufacture ot' door-protectors adapted to be used on the front edges of doors to prevent their warping out of shape, while at the same time they are increased in strength at the point which has been weakened by the mortise into which the inortised look usually employed is inserted.
rlhe invention consists in a metallic plate of the full width ofthe thickness of the edge of the door and of the same length as the door, provided with the necessary holes, through which pass screws or their equivalents for securing the same to the edge of the door, and
Y it is also provided with flanges on each side to embrace the door at the point where the mortise-lock is let into the same, and is also pro vided with an elongated slot, through which' the bolts of the lock can operate.
In the accompanying drawing, which forn's a part of this specification, A represents the front edge section of a door, and B the metallic plate secured to such front edge. This plate extends the whole length ofthe door, and is provided with flanges O upon each Side, designed to embrace the door at the point where the mortise-loek is let into the same, and thereby strengthen it where it is weakened by said mortise. These flanges, extending a little above and below the position of such lock, may be secured to the door by means of suitable screws or rivets, and the bar is also provided with an elongated slot, D.
In preparing these protectors for market, of course they are made of different widths to suit the different thicknesses of doors ordina` rily made, and as doors vary more in length than they do in thickness,tl1ey should be made long enough to fit any ordinary door, and upon their inner faces, near each end, and at a quarter to a half inch distance apart, they should be laterally grooved, as shown at a. The object of these grooves is to enable the carpenter to tit the protector to any size of door, say, for instance, if the protector is too long for the door, or the flanges that protect the place where the mortise-lock is let into the saine, all that is necessary to do is to break oli' one or more portions of the protector between two ofthe grooves.
The use of this device will be found of great benefit, not only when applied to new doors to prevent their warping out ofshape, but they may be applied to old and warped doors, forcibly held straight until the protector is secured in place, when it will be found that the warping is cured.
l am aware of Patent No. 220,852, issued to J. Louprette, October 2l, 1879, and make no claim to the construction shown therein, as I deem my invention essentially diiierent therefrom and an improvement thereon.
l. The door-protector herein described, consistingof a metallic plate the full length and width of the front edge of the door, and provided with flanges to embrace the door at the point where the mortise-lock is let into the same, and with an elongated slot, through' which the bolts of the lock can freely operate, substantially as described.
2. The hereinbeforedescribed door-pro tector with grooves out laterally across the inner face near its ends, substantially as and for the purposes specified. Y
