Description

R. B. HINDLE.
Side-Sticks for Printers Galleys. No.140,368. Patentedluly1,l873,
AM PHOTD-LIIHDGRAPH/C co. 1v. mosaamvs macsss) UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFIGE.
ROBERT B. HINDLE, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN SIDE-STICKS FOR PRINTERS GALLEVS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140.368, dated July 1, 1873; application filed November 29, 1872.
' To all whom it may concern:
of an improved side-stick for securing and locking types in galleys. The nature thereof consists, chiefly, in the combination of two parallel side-bars, pivoted arms, rack, and
. swinging arms, so that said side-bars can be adjusted in various lateral positions and locked in positions required, in manner as hereinafter more fully will appear.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view; Fig. 2, also a perspective view, but reversed in position.
Ordinarily to secure and lock types in galleys quoins are used, which are placed between a side-stick and bevel-stick. M yimprovement consists of two parallel side-bars, A A, of wood or metal, united at their ends by pivoted armsaa. The side-barsA A, by means of their pivoted arms a a, can be freely moved or adjusted to any required distance within therange of its rectangular position or width of instrument. The adj ustmcnts of this side-stick suit all sizes of columns, or different sizes and widths of galleys, and thus is adapted for all manner of printing, book, job, or newspaper work. In order to secure the side-stick in any of its positions the same is provided with a locking device, consisting of swinging arms 13 B I pivoted to the bar A. 'Further,'the arms B B are fitted to engage a rack, O, with which the inner face of the bar A is provided. This locked form dispenses with the use of quoins, secures the type as firmly, and especially protects the galleys from the unequal strain consequent froin the use of quoins. To close the side-stick allowance is made in the bar A for the swinging arms B B to be entirely inclosed in a groove, 11. Also, the groove 1) is extended to the ends to allow for closing action of the arms a a. For same purpose the bar A has .its rack and ends partly grooved, as at I), (see figures.) I dispense also with ordinarybevelstick.
My improved side-stick can be used from either end and sides, is simple, more readily constructed and applied to galleys, and otherwise possesses advantages readily apparent.
Having thus fully described my said improvements, what I claim is-' The combination of the side-bars A A, pivoted arms a a, swinging arms B B, rack O, grooves b b, all arranged to form an improved side-stick, substantially as set forth.
In testimony of said invention I have hereunto set my hand.
