Be it known that I, GEORGE FRANK Wrr- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at York, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain, new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Strike Plates and Door Antirattlers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying b drawing.

This invention relates to a strike plate for door locks and has for its principal object to provide an adjustable strike plate so that doors can be closed tightly against the rab- 5 bets of the door frame to compensate for shrinkage or warping of the door and to guard against the .usual rattling of loose doors and prevent the entrance of cold air.

AnOther object of the invention is the pro- 20 vision of a strike plate having an adjustable section of novel construction and arrangement, together with an adjusting means that is concealed from view by being set into a mortise in the door frame, the adjusting means, however, being accessible at all times -by means of an ordinary screw driver so that any unskilled person can set the adjustable section of the strike plate to the desired posiglion for effecting the proper closing of the oor.

With these and other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement of hereinafter and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.

In the accompanying. drawings, which illustrate one embodiment of the invention, Figure l-is a perspective view of the adjustable strike plate shown in position on the door frame. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the strike plate before being applied to a door frame and with the adjustable section removed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the adjustable section of the strike plate detached. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of the strike plate taken in the plane of the adjusting means and showing the door and look by dotted lines. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5-5, Fig. I. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line 6-6, Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings, A designates parts which will be more fully described the fixed section of thestrike late, and B, the adjustable section thereof, t e adjustable, section being supported on'the fixed section and both being set into a suitably shaped mortise in the door frame.

The fixed section comprisesa face plate 1 from the rear vertical-edge of which extends a right angular rabbet plate that is set into the rabbet of the door frame, as shown in Fig. 1, .and the face plate has a central rectangular opening 3 into which the bolt of thedoor lock is adapted to enter. Extending forwardly from the face plate 1 are guide lugs or extensions 4 that are connected together by a seat bar 5. The face plate is ormed with horizontal flanges (Sthat extend laterally at right angles thereto and are spaced above and below the top and bottom edges of the bolt-receiving opening 3 so that gulde or retaining flanges 7, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, are provided at the top and bottom of the said opening to assist; in holding the adjustable section of the devicein place. date portions of the adjustable section B of the strike plate. The face plate 1 has countersunk openings 12 for receiving screws 13 for fastening the device on the door frame, and in the rabbet plate is a countersunk. opening 14 for receiving the adjusting device for the section B.

The adjustable section B of the device is constructed as shown in Fig. 3, and consists of a tongue or plate-like strike portion 15 that slidably fits between the guide lugs 4 of the plate 1, and said strike portion 15 bears against the seat bar .5. The body porof a box of such size as to fit between the walls 6 of the chamber of the fixed section of the device. The top and bottom walls 16 of the body of the section B slide between the walls 6 and engage'the flanges 7 of the strike plate 1, and the front wall 17 of the said box-like body forms a support for the strike portion 15 that is integrally connected with such wall. ' and passing through the screw just behind the rabbet plate 2 is a cotter pin 21 or equivalent device which cooperates with the head to form a swivel connection between the screw and fixed section A of the strike plate. Hence, .by turning the screw by means of a screw driver, the adjustable section is moved horizontally inwardly or outwardly so that the shoulder 22 formed by the front end of the box-like body of the section or keeper B would be in the proper position to engage the bolt of the look when the door bears snugly against the rabbet of the door frame. The door frame is mortised so as to accommodate the adjusting screw and the body ortion of the adjustable section of the strike plate.

The desi n of the various parts is such that the strike plate is of neat and attractive appearance and the adjusting means is wholly concealed from view with the exception of the head of the screw thereof. Furthermore, the adjustment of the keeper section can be eflected with ease and no special skill-is required. I

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readil apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that'such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claims appended hereto. 1

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, is r 1. The combination of a door framehaving a mortise, with a strike plate consisting of a fixed section set into the mortise, an adjustable section having a body portion set into the mortise and provided with a strike portion projecting forwardly from the front edge of the fixedsection, and an adjusting screw disposed parallel with the said-strike portion and having a swiveled connection with one section and a threaded connection with the other section and disposed in the mortise.

2. The combination of a door frame hav: ing a mortise, with a strike plate consisting of a fixed section having guiding means set into the mortise, an ad ustable keeper secopening tion having a box-like body slidable in the said means and set into the mortise and provided with a forwardly-extending platelike strike portion, said body extending rearwardly behind the rear portion of'tlie fixed section, and an adjustingvscrew for the keeper section, said screw being located behind the opening of the fixed section and having its front end swiveled in the rear portion of the fixed section and its-rear end threaded in the rear portion of the keeper secton and concealed in the mortise.

3. An adjustable strike plate and door anti-rattler comprising a fixed section having an opening in its face, an adjustable keeper section having a box-like body disposed at the opening and provided with a plate-like strike portion extending forwardly from the front of the opening, and

a device connected with the rear portions adjusting the keeper section parallel with the said face, said.device being located wholly behind the opening in the fixed section.

An adjustable strike plate and door anti-rattler comprising a fixed section formed of a face plate having a lockbolt and of a lateral rabbet plate at the rear edge of the face plate, an adjustable keeper section slidably mounted on the fixed section and provided with a plate-like strike portion projecting forwardly from the front ofthe opening disposed to the rear of the rabbet plate, and a keeper section adjusting screw having its head swiveled in the rabbet plate and its threaded shank screwed in the rear portion of the keeper section.

5. An adjustable strike plate and door anti-rattler comprising a fixed section formed of right angular face and rabbet plates, said face plate having a lock bolt opening, walls around the opening forming a chamber; a keeper section having a boxlike bodyslidable. in the chamber and provided with a strike portion at the front endof the body; and a screw swiveled in the rabbet plate and extending rearwardly therefrom and threaded in the rear wall of the said body of the keeper section.

An adjustable strike plate and door anti-rattler comprising a fixed section formed of angularly disposed face and rabbet plates, said face plate having a' lock bolt opening, lugsextending forwardly from the front edge of the face plate at the top and bottom of the opening, a seat bar extending from one lug to the other and disposed to one side of the plane thereof, and guides at one side of the face plate above and below the opening; a keeper section having a body slidable onthe guides and provided with a plate-like strike portion slidably bearing on the seat bar and disposed between and flush with the said lugs; and means for adand having a rear portion' of the said body and the fixed section for p and guides atone side of the face plate justing the keeper section. on the fixed sec,
