STRIKE PLATE FOR DOOR LOCKS.
APPLICATION mum DEO.18, 1911.
Patented Apr. 2, 1912.
I I 'l 7 IV [55 5 5 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
PETER F. AUGENBRAUN, 0F STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE YALE & TOWNE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT.
STRIKE-PLATE FOR DOORFLOCKS.
Patented Apr. 2, 1912.
Serial No. 666,476.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PEJ'ER F. Accen- BRAUN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stamford, in the county of Falrfield and State of Connecticut, have mvented. certain new and useful Improvements in Strike-Plates for Door-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in strike plates for door locks, the object being to provide a strike plate with an ad- I justable member, which, if the door changes its position with reference to the jamb, may be adjusted to compensate for such change in position and thereby provide for the complete closure of the door or prevent any movement of the door when the latter is in its locked position.
\Vith this object in view my invention consists in the parts and combinations of parts as will be more fully explained and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the improved strike plate. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the keeper removed. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the keeper, and Figs. 4 and are views in section showing the keeper in its two extreme positions.
1 represents the strike plate provided at its rear edge'with a right angle flange 2, which rests against the rabbet of the door frame, and at or approximately at its longitudinal center with an opening which latter is bounded on the rear face of plate 1, by the flanges 4 and 4, the flange 4 being at the front, and the flange 4 in planes re-.
spectively above and below the opening, all of said parts being integral with the plate. The top and bottom flanges 4 decrease in width rearwardlv and merge into the rear surface of the strike plate 1 adjacent the rear edge of the opening therein as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. These flanges 4 and 4 are provided with the bendable lips 5 which latter are folded over the metal plate 6, which rests on the free edges of the flanges 4 and 4 and forms a rear closure for the opening and gives a finish to the plate.
The face plate 1 is provided centrally at the front, with a front extension 8 formed preferably by riveting a plate to the underside of the rear face of plate 1, and projecting outwardly in advance of said plate to form a seat for the support of the keeper 9 which latter is directly engaged by the bolt of the lock or latch. This keeper is simply a flat plate shaped to cover the outer face of the front extension or seat 8 and is adapted to normally rest flush, and make a neat and close finish with the face plate. The front edge of the face plate is cut away to form shoulders 10 to receive the rear edge of the keeper, and both the seat or extension and the keeper are provided with a hole for the passage of the screw 11, which latter adjustably secures the keeper to the plate. The hole through keeper 9 is elongated to permit the latter to be moved toward or away from the plate so as to project more or less over the opening in the plate, and is countersunk to receive the head of the screw; the meeting faces of the seat and keeper 9 are serrated to prevent any movement of the keeper on the seat.
In applying the strike plate, it will be so set up and located with relation to the lock bolt, that the latter will pass over and to the rear of the keeper 9 and rest within the opening in the plate. If through shrinkage or warping of the door or jamb, the bolt fails to catch, by loosening the screw 11, the head of which is exposed when the door is open, the keeper 9 can be disengaged from its seat 8 and moved outwardly a distance sufficient to permit thebolt to engage its rear edge.
If at any time any play should develo between the door and the jamb, Whic would permit the door to move, this play or loose movement may be taken up by loosening up the screw 11 thus permitting the keepr 9 to be disengaged from its serrated seat and moved inwardly.
I prefer to so construct the parts that the rear edge of the keeper will under all adjustments be within or between the shoulders 10 adjacent the outer edge of the plate 1, so as to be supported by the latter against deflection or movement caused by its contact with the bolt.-
It is evident that many slight changes might be resorted to in the relative arrangement of parts shown-and described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I would have it understood that I do not wish to confine myself to the exact construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, but
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to. secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, a strike plate for looks having a recess, a depressed seat at the front of the recess, the
said seat being serrated on its outer face,
and a movable keeper plate adjustably secured on said serrated seat.
2. As a newarticle of manufacture, a strike plate for looks having a recess, shoulders and a depressed seat in front of said recess and projecting at the front of the plate, and a movable keeper plate resting on said seat and supported at its rearedge by the shoulders-on the strike plate.
' seat and adapted to be projected over the front edge of the recess in the strike plate. 5. As a new article of manufacture, a
strike plate having a recess, a depressed seat in front of said recess and projecting in front of the strike plate, and a keeper adjustably secured on said seat, the outer face of said keeper being flush with the outer face of the strike plate.
6. As a new article of manufacture a strike plate having a recess for the bolt head, and a depressed seat at the front of said recess, the said depressed seat extending from the recess to a point in advance of the outer edge of the strike plate proper, a
keeper mounted on said seat and a screw for adjustably securing the keeper to its seat.
7. As a new article of manufacture, a strike plate for looks having a recess and seat at the front of the recess and a movable keeper plate adjustably secured on said seat.
8. As a new article of manufacture a strike plate for locks having a recess and a seat 1n front of sald recess and a movable .keeper plate adjustably secured on said seat,
means for holding the keeper on the strike plate and independent means for preventing movement of the keeper.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PETER F. AUGENBRAUN.
