SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,206, dated November 9, 1886.
Application filed March 6, 1886.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, Josnrn H. SEED, of
Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and'State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hasp-Locks; and I do hereby declare that thefollowingis a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in whichv Figure 1 is an elevation in perspective of my improved hasp-lock; Fig. 2, a transverse section of same in line as x, and Fig. 3 a similar section in line y y of Fig., 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective of the staple when secured by aplate, and Fig.6 a perspective of a modified form of pivot-bolt.
My invention relates to that class of hasp. locks in which the locking mechanism to engage the staple is carried by and upon thehasp. Heretofore in locks of this description the hasp is made to swing out upon the pivot-bolt which secures it in a plane coincident with the length I of said bo1t, so as to lift off from the staplein a direction at right angles to the surface of the casing to which the staple is madefast,where by when the lock is shot it alone bears all strains exerted upon the hasp and lock in any attempts made to force open the door securedv thereby. The construction of the hasp in this form of hasp-lock has also been more-or less complicated, in order to prevent a removal or loosening of the bolt or screw by which it is fastened. I
The object of my invention is to relieve the lock-bolt from strain when the hasp is locked,
and to simplify its construction, and therebyreduce its cost.
In the accompanying drawings,Arepresents the hasp, made in one piece and suitablyem through the bottom of the recess near the inner end of the shank, and the recess is made deep enough to receive and inclose the head of a bolt, 13, inserted through the slot, andby which Serial No. 194,284. (No model.)

This bolt is formed with an angular shank e, (see Fig..3,) to pass through the door, so that it may not turn in its seat therein; or, as an equivalent device, the bolt may be flanged, as shown in Fig. 5, while its outer end, f, immediately below its head, is made cylindrical to serve as a pivotal bearing for the hasp,\upon which it may freely swing and turnin aplane parallel with the face of the door. The head of the bolt B is made wide enough to overlap fully the edge of the slot 0, and thereby confine the hasp and prevent it from being lifted or swung outwardly from the face of the door while it is left free to turn and swing over the face of the door upon the bolt as a pivotal center.
A transverse recess is formed in the casing at the outer end of the hasp outside the lock confined therein, and the wall of the casingupon one edge of the hasp, near to its extreme outer end, is cut away or slotted, as shown at G, Figs. 1 and 2, to allow the end of the hasp to be swung as it turns upon the bolt B over the end of a staplefH, secured to the casing of the door in line with said opening or slot G. a The hasp may be thus carried laterally over the staple, so that the eye of thelatter shall be wholly inclosed within the recess ,in the end of the hasp, as shown in Fig. 2.
The eye of the staple H is made of a rectangular form, as shown in Fig. 2, either upon the end of a threaded stem or screw, H, or upon a plate, L, (see Fig. 4,) by which it is made fast to the door post or casing. An offset orshoulder, 2', is formed centrally under the innerbar, j, of the eye proper, whereby when the staple is secured in place an open space or recess is left between the inner member or bar, j, of the staple and the surface of the casing. The longitudinal slot 0 in the stem of the hasp through which the bolt B is passed permits the adjustment of the opening G in the outer end I 5 of the hasp, so that it shall register properly with the staple in case of a shrinkage of the door or a change in its relation to the casing in which the staple is secured.
I do not claim, broadly, a hasp bearing a locking mechanism and pivoted to turn upon a bolt and to inelose within the recess in its outer end a staple into which the lock-bolt is shot in order to fasten the hasp; but
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, wit-h a staple, H, and a hasp, A, carrying a lock-case upon its outer end to reeeivealocking mechanisni,and formed with a slot, G, cut in its edge near its outer end to permit the hasp to slide laterally over the 30 end of the staple H, and thereby bring thelatter within a recess in the end of the hasp in position to be engaged by the lock-bolt, of a transverse plate, k, formed or secured across the end of the recess opposite said opening to pass under and engage the lower bar, j, of the 3 5 eye of the staple when the hasp is closed over said staple, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The combination, with a hasp, A, carrying a lock-case at its outer end to receive a 0 locking mechanism, a recess in the outer end of the lock-case provided with a lateral opening or slot, G, in the edge of the case, and fitted with a transverse plate, 70, formed or fitted across the recess at the end oppositesaid open- 5 ing, of a staple, H, constructed with a rectangular eye, and an offset, 1', under the inner bar,
j, of the eye, whereby the transverse plate It may pass under said bar when the staple is inclosed by the recess in the outer end of the 0 hasp, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
